Other forums? hehe

Yeah - I need to update this thread as all the livestock is in and I am playing with different 400W and 1000W reflector/lamp combinations and recording PAR numbers.

And finally, while a couple people were over last night I snapped a couple shots....first is with the VHO's only:

And with all the lights on

That is some awesome aquascaping... simple lines, good balance, very unique...

Hard to duplicate everything but seems like there are a lot more very large setups here. It's cool sharing experiences with other large system reefers. :) Still need to get out yoru way!

Wow have I neglected RC, sorry.

I'll play abbreviated catch up....

I let the dust settle a bit after moving all the rock and fish over to the new tank and started looking at the PAR I was getting.....

At the lowest point (because of the VHO's on the bottom) the 400w Radium 20K lamps were 13" off the water. The par was not bad at all and most people would have been happy with the results.....well, I wanted to make sure I exhausted all options before I settled on a ballast/lamp/reflector combination.

So with help from a few fellow local ARC members, I was able to test different reflectors, lamps, and ballasts.

Here is a chart of my test results for any PAR nuts out there.

I looked for a 20K 1000W lamp (preferably Radium) to test with...

Here is a shot shortly after moving livestock from my old tank to the new display. No aquascpaing yet.

1x1000W 14k lamp on the far left compared to 2x400W lamps in the middle and the right. Gives you an idea of the brightness difference. :)

1000W lights are the way to go

1000W lights are the way to go

Long story short I couldn't get the level of PAR low in the tank with enough spread left to right and front to back to make me happy with 400's.

That said, I rebuilt the light rack from scratch to accomodate a 2x1000W setup with VHO's and R2 moonlights. It also gave me the chance to make the rack a little stronger and reverse stagger the VHO's.

Now temporarily covering the lights with plywood to see how they look with the Helios 20k lamps....(Hamilton Ballasts)

My camera is just a point and shoot so I can't capture the tank right at all. I really like the 1000W 20k lamps. It's a nice blue hue.

Ugly shots of the never ending basement setup/cleanup. These are a little older so it's much cleaner than these shots....

There is a 30g fuge and 4 7" filter sock system on the far right of this setup. All water goes through 16' of filtration/processing before it returns up to the display. There is a 1HP chiller plumbed outside.

You can't see the 240W industrial UV under the bench.

And one of the best things I ever did, the WC system. I can do a 100G water change by opening and closing 2 valves and I never have to turn the main return pump off. :)
