P04 At The Tap

So it's no surprise that many muni water supplies add phosphate to the water supply in order to combat corrosion based on EPA guidelines.

So I'm looking to compare my municipal water supply with that of other reefers around the country.

For a long time I was battling algae problems in my tank and I finally decided one day to test P04 at the tap and coming out of my RO/DI.

Tap = 0.75ppm Hannah Checker
RO/DI Out (with new membrane/filters) = 0.17ppm Hannah Checker

Algae issue found! Every day I was adding algae fuel in my topoffs and really kicking it into high gear when doing a 15% WC.

Rectified situation with additional stage on my unit for GFO prior to the DI stage.

Have any of you tested your tap water and if so, what are your P04 levels?

Thanks!

Chris

hear in Los angeles i checked the tap twice....once was in the 30 ish ppb phosphorus and the other time was in the 50 ish ppb. after ro/di about 8-12 ppb but i'm going through 3 resin chambers.

conversion = ppb X3.066/1000 =ppm

so somewhere in the .09 ppm- .18 ppm at the tap.

after third resin .03-.04 ppm phosphate

I think you made a wise move using a chamber of gfo ....i was considering that move but opted for two additional resin chambers. I think the two additional resins didn't do a heck of a lot.

Thanks for chiming in outssider. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one but it does appear my water is significantly higher than yours in P04.

Anyone else?

I have the same situation.My reading is .04 out ro/di and that's with two di-resin chambers and two ro-membranes.I run alot of gfo and my DT still has algae.This is driving me crazy.
