AquaMedic OceanLight Pendant Paint Project

I'm going to purchase a 150watt HQI OceanLight pendant and paint it black. Silver is cool, but the black color will be really nice. Please look over my plans!

- Remove AquaMedic Decal
- Remove UV Glass
- Remove Bulb
- Remove reflector
- Mask the inside of the vent holes
- Mask the reflector area
- Mask metal hanger holes
- Mask the power chord
- Sand down with 2000 grain (super fine) sand paper until silver is pretty much gone
- Apply 5 super thin coats of Krylon High Heat Black paint
- Wait a few days to let dry completely
- Unmask and replace all parts

Krylon High Heat Paint
* Withstand temperatures up to 1000°F
* Provides a clean, durable finish
* Protects against rust
* Dries to the touch in minutes

Questions:
1. Will this paint be overkill? Switch to regular paint?
2. Will this paint look good?

Thanks!

You will want the high heat paint. However I have the same lights and they look good silver. I thought I wanted mone black too but the silver is really nice. Now that I have said that I am building a canopy. Good luck and take pictures so I can see wait they look like black.

You do not need to sand the paint "til its almost gone". Just so it turns dull. Sounds good:)

ah ok, I'll just sand it a little then. I was dreading sitting there for hours going at it with some sand paper =P

Especially 2000 grit, it'd take you a looong time:D
Really, you can use 400 and it'll look fine. Most body shops use a fine Scotch-Brite pad to scuff the surface and the new paint fills in just fine.
DO use the wet sanding method to keep from loading the paper too quickly and going insane:)

Get the wet dry paper, its dark grey. Use a trickle of water from the hose on it as you sand it, and it wont load up the paper, so it will last longer and sanding will go quicker. Rinse it good, then wipe dry when finished.
Have fun and post pics of the finished product:)
