Painting with light...

I tried out some "painting with light" as there is no moon tonight so the moon lights were out.

Basically, I manually focused a 105mm Nikon macro lens and then shined a 1-LED acentic light (a toy that came with a fragging kit) on the coral. Exposures were generally ISO 640 at f/10-f/16 for about 13 seconds.

There was no PP done except to export them at a file size for posting except one image I played with the color balance until it was right.

These were all taken with my new toy, a D3. Amazing what the camera can do at even high ISO's...

This hockey shot is ISO 4000, but did have some NR done in PP

I just checked some high ISO pics online of the D3 and all I can say is WOW!

This is less than half the full frame (Cropped) but no noise reduction applied, some sharpening in Adobe Lightroom and then exported for posting.

D3 and 300mm f/2.8
ISO 4000 f/4.0 for 1/250th second.

Sweet camera. Nice pictures. I like the light painting. Was that done with just an actinic light or was it done with something like Night Sea?

Phyl, the only light used in the light painting was a single LED actinic (Which I always mispell) not sure what the power of it is just a little key chain that came in a fragging kit I bought.

Aussie...not sure why they would not show up, all hosted on my .mac account. .mac may have been having issues when you tried to view them.

What cam did you have before the D3 and what do you do with it besides take pictures of fish and hockey? How long have you had it? Have you had any issues with it?

Many camera's...

D2x, D200, D70 converted to IR, Mamiya 645af, some range finders, TLR's, and old 35mm.

Had issues with older camera's but nothing you would not expect. No problems with any modern or DSLR's. The D3 I have only had since December 26th, no problems so far.

Take photographs of anything. Get paid for portraits and sports photography though, only sold a few wildlife and landscape prints in my life. Do not really market for any of it, but have given thought to doing a bit more on the "Sales man" side of the business.

Amazing camera and shots...my brother is aiming at picking up a D3 this year, unless Nikon releases a D3x or something for the 2008 Olympics.

what an amazing camera..........but for around $5000 for the body, it should be! It really is amazing how far digital camera's have come in such a short time.

D3X will be aimed at Studio & landscape rather than sports and high ISO, so I'd personally rather have the D3. Of course finding them is a virtual impossibility right now anyway.
