I don't know why everyone says just get a bigger one and a smaller one. That couldn't be more wrong. You could wind up with a small male and a large male. It has been shown that sex reversal is possible, but it's likely that one fish will tear the other to shreds before it has a chance to change.
You must find a female or a juvenile and pair that fish up with a larger fish. I guess the small fish/big fish thing is true in the sense that a juvenile is going to be very small, for what that's worth. And of course if you're willing to do trial and error, you can try the any big fish/little fish method, but you'd want to do that in some kind of controlled situation where you can easily catch one if it turns out to be two males.

+1---DD can be trusted completely.
Angel*Fish, that has always been my experience when pairing angelfish, especially with the similar C. argi. I have formed four pairs that way, and know they were pairs because I collected their eggs and tried some attempts with the larvae. I think I'll be able to raise them one day, but not now. I move around too much with school and its just not feasible to have tanks right now. Check my homepage for a log of my pairs.

Are you saying it doesn't matter what the sex is as long as one is bigger?
Edit: If the pictures are representative of all the pairs, it's pretty evident that you were choosing a juvenile for the smaller fish. At least in those pics. That will always work. Putting two males together does not work.
So how did that work out feeding the growing larval stage?

Very nice pickup off of DD, I saw them and loved them. I currently have a single flameback in my 30g with mix of sps, lps, and zoas and so far so good. He picks a bit at my one gorgonian but other than that he is ok. I believe they are one of the more reef safe dwarf angels (if there is a thing). They are known to be pretty aggressive so they should hold their own against bigger fish, just be careful if you have smaller fish, they can pick on them.
Those are the size our LFS gets argis in at. Also, all those pics were after I had them paired for a month. The females stayed small. Later in the thread, you can see I moved one of the pairs to a biocube at home. That wasn't a new pair, but one of the older pairs that had been paired for a year. Also I wouldn't really call them juvenile if they are spawning...

Well you got me there :lol: I just meant it looks like that's what you started with. It's really hard to tell size from photos. We do see the tiny ones turning up at the LFS's here, too. Talk about cute! But it's not something you can count on - there may be quite a wait. And something like a female flame can be quite hard to find here.

diver dens...cutest things..i think the small one is female? thanks for all the responses guys. i was worry about the nipping on the sps, lps and clams. keeping my fingers x. also picked up a pair of Bellus at Pet Co of all places. the one by our house is lot better with their care.
