Pairing angel fish

Hi, I have a juv emperor angel and would like to have him/her be paired for life :love2:. I know that breeding will most likely not happen be a bonded pairs on reefs look awesome. I know there is a 50/50 chance of a pair happening as long as I follow this.

1. The other angel must bigger or smaller

Has any one really paired large angel fish? Should I try a pair and get hope to lucky or is it a waste of time.

99% chance it's a waste of time. Adult emperor angels will likely not pair up and fight to death unless they are in a 1,000g tank or more. Even if they co-exist in a smaller tank, they most likely will not "pair up" in the way you want them to. In addition, there are no physical differences between a male and a female.

Heck, I couldn't even get my male scribbled angel to "pair up" with my female scribbled, and my male regal to pair up with my female regal. They simply co-exist but definitely not "paired up."

Your 135g is also way too small for an emperor angel if you didn't already know. We usually recommend at least a 300g for long term care.

Less than that, I got my juv emperor just over 1.5 yrs ago at 2", now he is approaching 6.5-7" and almost fully changed to adult coloration

Does he 'talk' to you?

I've had 2 different adult Emperors that would make a grunt/clicking noise when they saw me and wanted to be fed!

Yes mine grunts at me not because he wants fed, but because he doesn't like me for whatever reason. Everytime I come close to the tank when everyone is out eating Nori (since the clip is on my front glass) he runs off and hides in his crevasse. I really think the fish just doesn't like me? My orange shoulder will eat out of my hand and my Quoyi will let me pet him. The emperor is almost entirely adult coloration now so maybe when he fully changes he won't be such a flight instead of fight fish
