pairing maroon clowns

Ok so now when the female gets close to the little guy, he kisses her on the cheek, but they do not stay together still. Things seem to be moving in the right direction.

Since they were getting along in the sump, i put them back in the main display, and i'm back to square one! she wants to kill him again! And my cherub angel fish is not helping either, since he is attacking the female and the male too. I guess i'll have to try with another male. GRRRR!!!

Ok, I added my GBTA from my 24g and now the female is hosting it. Now it does not want to kill the little guy anymore. She actually looks for him, he kisses her but does not follow her back to the nem. He stays on the other side of the tank. I guess It will take some time before he follows her to her new house! At least she is not a killing machine anymore.

here are a couple of pics. But now I have a problem. Not sure, but the little guy is beginning to get what I believe is ick from the stress i guess. What do i do? remove him and treat him in a quarantine tank?[/ATTACH]

thats good that they are both in but not the ick part=(
i dont know too much about it. but have heard of ppl feeding the fish to keep it healthy. theres also medicines out there that u can try. but post a thread up and ask first.

by the way, ick was proly already present in the tank. him getting stressed just got him more prone to it. id suggest quarantining all ur fish.

good luck.

ummm...i have a question..how do you know a clown is male or female...
my maroon clown is 2&1/2 inch(from mouth to end of the tail)...but i don't know it's sex..:sad2:

clowns dont have a sex when they are young. they are hermophodites. as they get older the bigger one becomes a female and the smaller one becomes male, when the female dies the male takes its spot and becomes the female(yea i know weird...lol). the only thing is that a male can become a female and a female CANNOT become a male again. usually when u leave a maroon clown by itself in a tank without any mate it becomes a female over time, which i think applys to u, but not sure how long its been in the tank alone?

ok, i did some research, so the best thing o do was to take all the fish out of my DT, including my new maroon pair, for at least 8 weeks and treat them with copper in a quarantine tank. Well from now on, all new fish will get quarantined to avoid this headache in the future

Big Female, Tiny Male

Big Female, Tiny Male

I had several failed attempts at finding a mate for my female Maroon. She'd chase any potential suitor straight out of the tank!

For me the thing that ended up doing the trick was simply waiting for the female to get larger, about four inches head to tail, and then to get the tiniest male I could find. He was about half an inch long when I got him, and the two of them were sleeping in the same anemone the night he was introduced.

My female does seem especially aggressive to me, but I've read these are especially aggressive fish. The key seems to be that the female absolutely cannot feel threatened by the other fish otherwise she'll go on a psychotic killing spree.

Good luck with the ich. I recommend getting a couple of skunk cleaner shrimp. They've cleaned ich-like parasites (white spots) off of my fish before, and they're great animals to have in your tank. It's fun to watch them give little hugs to the fish as they preen them.

you should ask in the forum for sick fish in the Reef Central Online Community. i never experianced this so im proly not much help. but tht seems like a safe amount of time for to help it. i think most ick treatment are based off copper, which some animals are sensitive to. i hear alot of people using formalin.

sorry to hear that.=(

how are the other fish doing?
They are all in a quarantine tank, being treated with copper. My powder brown tang had it pretty bad, but it looks better allready. My other fish are ok, but i will keep my DT free of fish for at least 8 weeks. thanks for asking.

it's been 1 year..is it usually enough time to become female?

its been a female, the change happens pretty quickly when a clown is in a comfortable location that is lacking a mate.

whats the smallest sized aquariums everyones pairs of maroons have mated in? specifications and parameters are appriciated.

Ok so I went to the LFS an bought another maroon clown, but this little guy looks more orange than maroon, and when he sees the female, he does not do the submissive dance like the other guy did. so I know that there are gold stripe maroons and white stripe maroons correct? so why are some maroons more orange than others? i hope it's the same species because the other little guy had a verry dark maroon color to it, and he did the submissive dance right away. My new maroon is more red than maroon and he does not do the dance. Any suggestions?
