pairing question

ok anybody have an idea what is the best combination when trying to establish a pair? i mean should you have one female with a few males? or how about a few females with one male?

I dont think they're very picky when it comes to mates. Almost any two horses will eventually form a bond, rather like freshwater kribensis cichlids. :) Having several males might result in some aggression towards each other while they court the female. I seem to remember some posts about this a while back.

ok i have a male and female currently. they do exhibit bonding behavior only like hanging on each other and floating around. so basically i dont have to worry? when they are ready they will do thier thing? i was just thinking that i could better ensure a pairing by giving a pick but if a male and female are together long enough they'll get going then im fine in letting them be and court each other for now. thanks for the info.

They will do there thing eventually. Don't stress on the minutes. I had a pair of WC reidi take 3 years before the first preganancy, but they did practice alot. ;)

ok i am about to make thier water envirnment prestine first thing tommarow. i will be adding a coralife skimmer on it wich should skim the envirnment clean! i have one on my 75 reef and it is amazing. also i will begin feeding soaked frozen mysis in selcon! im sure eventually they will get really happy. im sure i have a male and female check out the pic's

Yep, male and female pair there. :) Unless that female is too small to have decided if she will eventually grow a pouch.

PE or Hikari mysis that is soaked in rotation with selcon, phytoplan, naturose, or Vibrance (from OceanRider and has beta glucan which is a great addition) would be happily accepted.

Search back on this board and the other seahorse sites on keeping skimmers with SH. Some people say nay, some say its not a problem. They are typically concerned about microbubbles in the system affecting the SH and potentially causing GBD (gas bubble disease).

yeah i have read all about the bubble thing. the skimmer i will use puts no micro bubbles into the system. I have had some people tell me that its not that big of an issue as long as the bubbles are not covering everything in the tank when they form. in any case. yes i have been feeding hikari mysis and they luv it. today i tried to soak some in marine zoe. the funny thing is that the male gobbled it up but for some reason the female didnt like the taste. she kept on spitting each piece back out. i immediately got some fresh mysis thawed it and she gobbled it up so it had to be something with the zoe. i dont think the zoe is that great for them so i will try selcon once it arrives at my lfs. where can i order some vibrance? ocean rider.com? ill try that. thanks for the info bro! much apprieciated!

Ahhh.. four inches she should stay a girl then! :) Best of luck to you with the pair. Vibrance or other enrichment goodies are a great investment.

I would no longer listen to these people.

so if i have a skimmer and no bubbles present in the tank what so ever i should worry? i did make the statement sound like if bubbles are all over the tank but not covering anything its fine...i misspoke....i meant that if you see no bubbles and nothings covered by bubbles then you have no worries....is that wrong?!

The topic is so iffy and the debate is so heated. The pro skimmer people will tell you that if the skimmer is producing no bubbles than it is fine. The con skimmer people will tell you that any skimmer on a horse tank will increase the likelyhood of GBD is a seahorse that is prediposed to it. For me the skimmer whne it's running is in the sump.

Have I run a skimmer on a seahorse tank yes.

Have I ever had disease no.

Do I think the safest way to run a skimmer on a horse tank is in the skimmer, yes.

Is it a descion you have to mkae for you, yes.

i run a skimmer as well, i feel that they can use the extra oxygen and helps with water changes as well.

The oxygen provided from a protein skimmer is minmial. If you want to increase the o2 levl remove the powerhead from the skimmer and aim it at the surface of the water. The bubbles do not add o2 to the water. The only way to add o2 economically in the hobby is to create surface turbulance.
