Paly poisoning

Anyone had reactions to Palys? What was it like?

I bought some plays today, acclimated them then gave them a freshwater dip (recommended by my LFS)didn't wear gloves...didnt know to. It's an hour later and I just ate, everything tasted really, really sweet..not like sugar sweet but artificial sweetener sweet. I've washed my hands really well (many times) but they taste very sweet too. My tongue feels slightly tingly.

I can't think of anything that I've touched or been near that could have done this...could it possibly be the palys?

I haven't got any cuts on my hands so I'm wondering if I have a tiny trace on my skin (despite lots of washing) because my skin tastes like it's dipped in sugar. Now, don't laugh...I'm NOT walking round licking myself hehehehe (well, just once or twice lol)
 
for a landscaper/ carpenter...my hands are about as bashed up as ones could get...my hands are in my tank everyday...fixing corals...usually zoas on the sand bed that my strawberry conch has decided to relocate for me...

i wipe my hands on a towel i leave beside my tank, as i mention this is a frequent occurance, and very rarely remember to wash them...unless i am going to make supper or something...

in over a year of playing i have yet to ever feel ill....not saying i recommend this at all though...as i am leaving my self wide open to bacterial infections..etc...but as crazy as it is...my wounds seem to heal faster after a dip in the saltwater...

i really think people are looking far to hard at zoas/palys as being deadly toxic...especially since testing for said poison is basically unobtainable...i tend to think the some of the Wild colonies of zoa may have this poison as they would be frequently attacked by predators etc...but our now fairly aquacultured zoa/ palys available to the hobbist are absent of palyotoxin...

this is just my .o2 though...
 
I'm not feeling ill at all. My tongue and lips are slightly numb and this wierd sugary taste...or were, they are getting better now. It could have nothing to do with the new palys but it did start right after I was handling them. They didn't like the freshwater dip and got rather slimy. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same sensations...don't worry..I'm not about to be calling 911 :D
 
I hope you are feeling better miniwhinny and it's better to be safe than sorry. None of us are sure of what's in our systems, for that reason, I always exercise caution. The guy is the first link below is a friend of mine, I would hate to see anyone experience what he did. The mucus membrane or a tear/cut in the skin is the most likely entry point of anything that might cause you harm. For those reasons alone, I have a box of powder free latex gloves. Even if my water column is happy healthy and safe, I'm going to play it safe and protect myself from any unknowns. Not causing a scare, just providing info for everyone to make an informed choice. Stay safe my friend.

I really appreciate your help and the links. I'm feeling great this morning. It has to have been something in my tank because right after I was messing in there putting in the new palys I washed my hands and ate some M&M's. Right after that my lips and tongue went numb and taste wierd so it was something on my hands.

Whatever it was, I'm buying latex exam gloves...'cus it really did happen :)
 
I agree with NanoReefWanabe, If you washed your hands well, then it has nothing to do with your corals plus why would it make everything taste sweet?!
 
Because she got it on the m and m's with her fingers and then into her mouth.

Ive had a similar sensation with ricordia in mouth. Tongue and lip actually. It was kind of like a had a tiny bit of residual mentholatum on my fingers.

No...i wasnt sucking on them..........I was fragging, wiped my hand off on my jeans or a towel like i usually do and then took a copenhagen.

Miniwhinny.....hows that tank coming back?? I think you live really close to me. Werent you the one who had the little breaking and entering vandalism incident last year??

If she washed her hands correctly then no bacteria would of entered her mouth. Always wash your hands afterwards, that's all there is to it, no need for gloves.
 
i have definitely had the nasty numbness of the tongue from ric's and mushrooms...especially when they slime up...kinda like when you get deodorant in your mouth..

(honestly dont ask as i cant explain how either got into my mouth, but they were the only thing i could attribute to the taste...and numbing)

He said when he told his friend his friend became very grim.

Probably something that shouldn't be taken too lightly.
 
miniwhinny, I'm glad you chose to buy the gloves. Make sure you purchase the powder free gloves BTW.

Noise, glad you posted that, it is well documented in Calfo's Propagation book.
 
I got hit twice. once in the mouth and once in the eye. Not the best feeling, metal taste and numbing feeling, body aches, headaches feel like you have the flu. nausea and feel like vomiting etc.

Eye= Burning sensations for days, blood shot red yes, itching, feels like someone put bengay or mineral eyes and dabbed it in your eyeballs. Had to rush to the hospital got eye washed and eye droplets for a couple weeks, blurry ness etc.
 
2x in the eyes, even after washing my hands 3x. Woke up with them crusted over for 2 days. I'm a cat groomer & have scratches on my hands a lot. Red, ***** sores a couple of times after fragging protopalys. Still hate gloves.
 
I now wear nitrile gloves, saftey glasses, mask and clean my hands with antibacterial soap and after use alcohol as well. I aint messing with any chance.
 
Hey this can be a future HOUSE TV episode!

Man visits RC and gets advice and poisons himself and HOUSE investigates his computer and visits RC for an answer!

HAHAH this rocks!
