Panicky Potters Angel

Hey everyone.
I've had a potters angel for about a month now. When he first came he had a white blemish that looked like flukes. Ive since treated with prazipro and he looks fine.

The problem is the fish keeps darting around the tank. He eats great, but just looks panicky. He has a hard time calming down.

I havnt seen anyone else even go near him in the thank. Its a 55gal with a clown, lawnmower blenny, and goby neon.

Ive tried re arranging the rocks and moving the flow. It dosnt seem to help.

Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

The Potters I have is pretty shy but not panicky. I've had it for over 3 years and it comes out but never too far from the rock work. I'd give it more time to settle in especially since you moved the rocks around. As long as it's eating it should settle in eventually but don't expect it to be out swimming next to the front glass in my experience.

I would be a bit concerned about that, but not too much.

Mine is very calm, except for when I am standing near the tank --- when that happens it is front and center, expecting to be fed. :)

Is it paniky or is it more darting around the tank. It may just be getting used to its new settings and figuring out where everything is.

what's your lighting schedule like? Do you have actinics that come on first? Sudden sparking of my MH really panicked fish in my 28G.

Do you have sufficient places for him/her to hide in your rock work?

I agree that if the fish is eating it will probably be fine.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys.

The fish more or less swims along the front of the tank back and forth and fast. He dosnt really go near the rocks much. There are plenty of places to hide with about 40-50 pounds of rock.

I have a T5 set up with a blue moon light at night. I just ordered a white moonlight as well. He seems to get more stressed when its dark as opposed to daytime.

I don't turn the T5s on until 9-10ish. That way the natural sunlight has slowly lit up the room and its not too much of a shock.

I just think the fish is having a hard time adjusting to aquarium life. He does eat a lot though which is good. I don't think anything can really be done other than waiting it out. Just seeing if anyone else has had something similar.

78 F.

Your avatar is beautiful btw.

Thanks... that's my sps system... the reason I asked what temp is because with C. potteri being a Hawaiian endemic it is essentially a subtropical fish, and 78 degrees is too warm long term... when kept in warm temperatures they can have many issues, as can basically any fish that's evolved for hundreds of thousands to millions of years in a certain temperature range. Potter's are almost never found at snorkeling depth in Hawaii even... and will almost never see water at 78 degrees... especially long term...

Two things -
First - it sounds like he may be seeing his reflection and making aggressive displays with that fish in the mirror.
Second - I'm not good with knowing how much rock a certain poundage is, but that doesn't sound like nearly enough rock to me.

To prevent intestinal parasites, you may want to give a second treatment of prazi (orally). Listen to Copps about the tank temp, that's good information.

Depth, current and time of year are factors, but this is still a helpful water temp map. It's updated daily. http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/data/sst/latest_sst.gif
