how close to the water surface can these be placed? Also, on a 30"depth, can I expect the light to penetrate that far or will the space below 24" be reserved for lower light lps?

I've had them less than 4 inches but I would keep them at 4" as a minimum unless you want to wipe down the lamps and reflectors every couple days.

The lower part of a 30" tall isn't going to see a lot of light unless you are overdriving and using Ice Cap reflectors.

I am ordering my lights and stuff from that place you gave me Travis. From whom are you ordering?

im still not sold on them yet because you have to have more bulbs to get the same effect as metal halides, more sockets, more wiring......and they would constantly be in the way because most of these people install them about 4 to 6 inches above the water.
i can see how they would be better than pc's, but not metal halides.

the lamps are cheaper, use less electricity, create less heat and put more light in the tank watt for watt. I'd say they compare pretty favorably,

Freezerguy, I could see that if you are using a fixture, but when you have them mounted in a canopy the wires, bulbs, etc aren't a large factor in the equation

well....for what its worth...i removed 4 of my MH for T5s and could not be happier.

MH are a spot sourse, therefore they creat shadows, in those areas you dont get good growth. With T5s the light is spread more evenly. Thats a huge advantage to me.

Also the color of my corals is much better as well.

Paul.
