Just bought one of these. Always wanted one, got it for cheap. Are they a shy species? Found a nice cave and hasn't come out yet. He ate krill at the store but hasn't eaten anything yet. How often do they feed. Any info on these shrimp would help alot

they are super reclusive. they really prefer to hide during lights on times of tthe day. just like most marine predators, they rely on cathching food in the dark.

hell eat anything with a shell. try feeding him some clams on the halfshell when the lights have been out for an hour or two before you go to bed.,

There is a mantis shrimp forum with a lot of good inforation on RC. I have one of these too, very cool animal. If you can get it to make a cave at the front of the tank, you may see it come out often.

mmmm, not really. Most commercially available mantis shrimp are diurnal. O. scyllarus (peacock) isn't one of the reclusive ones. In the right tank they can be very active.

General recommended diet includes three or more frozen marine fleshy foods; they aren't picky and will take anything from clam (full or otherwise if it can crack the thing open), shrimp, krill, silverside, squid etc. It is recommended you soak the frozen in a supplement like selcon once in a while. Smasher mantids also need live hard shelled foods once in a while; these include snails, hermits crabs etc... a couple times a month is fine. Feed once every couple of days. you'll figure out how much over time because the mantis will throw the leftovers out the door.

OP can you post a picture? many retailers sell mantis shrimp under "peacock" and "clown" mantis shrimp and it often isn't actually a real peacock (O. scyllarus) at all. so the first thing we need to do is figure out what species it is.

From a Mantis's point of view

From a Mantis's point of view

A huge monster came and snatched your mantis from its home in the ocean, put it in to a small bag, stuffed that into a picth black box and left it their for a day, occasionally shaking it, sometimes violently. Then another huge monster took it out of that and put it into a tiny clear box where it couldn't see the walls, for a while. Then that monster snatched it out and put it into another small bag, into a pitch black box and left it there for another 24 hours again shaking it occasionally sometimes violently. A third huge monster took it out of that situation and put it into another small clear box and left it alone. Finally you came along and had the third huge monster dig it out of the small box it was in, put it into another small bag, then it got shaken gently (on the ride home) and put it into a final larger, yet still confining box. Then the big monster that has it now keeps lurking and peering at it all day long.
Now I don't care how out going and jovial you are, it would be a while before you even thought of settling down, let alone letting one of those monsters that captured you see you.

Peacocks do become rather out going, just give it time. Its been through more trauma than an Alabama trailor park hick, abducted by aliens and "probed". Keep feeding the mantis every day or so and it will soon come to understand you are not going to harm it, but will take care of it. They are smart critters, and will soon come to associate you with good things, not the bad stuff that came before you came on the scene.

Thurge resurfaces after quite a long time of exclusion with a great pov perspective! Welcome back! Nice to have an experienced stomatopod keeper back here.

Which species is least shy? I'm looking for something colorful and friendly and not shy... lol sounds like I need to get a parrot....but I want a mantis!
