Peaceful Tangs

Hi all-

I'm looking for advice on peaceful tangs. I want to limit aggression as much as possible, as I think it can absolutely devastate a tank. I have a lightly stocked 180 right now with the following:

  • Mystery Wrasse
  • Yellow Coris Wrasse
  • Matted Filefish
  • Magnificent Foxface
  • Lyretail Anthias
  • Diamond Goby

I don't think any of these would have issues with tangs. The foxface maybe, but I've heard that tangs know not to mess with those guys, is that accurate?

Ideally, I'd like to get two tangs. I also don't want anything huge. 1' being the max, but ideally smaller. I was thinking the following:

- White Tail Bristletooth Tang - This guy just caught my eye today. I like their coloring and they seem pretty small, so I thought it might be compatible.
- Blue Hippo Tang - Seems like a staple, very unique coloring, they always seem like one of the most peaceful tangs. Is that accurate?

Am I right? Are hippo tangs relatively docile? Thoughts or suggestions?

Hippo tangs tend to be jerks as they age. If you want to avoid aggression I would avoid that fish. In a 180 a yellow or purple tang should be fine from an aggression standpoint.

Typically the peaceful, mellow tangs are the large Acanthurus or Naso tangs all of which get 12-15" easily (some larger than that)

Nasos are mellow. I've heard Chevrons are as well. Every blue tang I've seen has been docile. I've kept yellows and purples - both pretty mean.

What derek said.
Chevron might be an option for you.

The whitetail can and probably will be an @sshole.

I agree to what Derek agrees to what the other Derek says.

Chevron is a good choice. Used to think that fish was useless until I realized what he ate and how well he maintains all my rocks for me. Love that thing now. Gross thing is when he poops, all the other tangs hover around him and wait for it so they can eat it. Yuck.
