Peacock Mantis

I had a peacock a while back and it passed away. It was like 2-3 years ago. I am looking to get another one soon. I haven't seen these guys around the LFS as of lately. Are they hard to come by now? Anyone know of a good place to get one? I am thinking of getting a juvi and watch it grow, maybe 3-4 inches?

I am thinking of setting up a 15 or a 20 gallon long for it. Would glass be ok of a mantis that small? Or will I am better off getting an acrylic tank?

Let me know and THANKS IN ADVANCE.

thanks

I think they are getting more difficult to find in the wild at a large size. You just have to check online stores and lfs in the area, it use to be easy with stomatopod.com but they don't exist anymore :(

If you get a juvenile, space wise a 20 long will be fine until it gets bigger. You could always line the bottom with acryllic or egg crate since most strike occur at the bottom. You could also custom order a tank with thicker glass but that's a little expensive. Glad to see you're getting back into mantis shrimp. Good luck!

I would start off with a 40B so You wouldn't have to put it through the stress of moving it to a different tank.

Also, Check Liveaquaria's Divers Den. They Get Peacocks in everyonce in a while.

Thanks guys for the info. I don't think I have enough room at the moment for a 40breeder. I had a peacock before that was very active and hardy that why I wanted another one. But I am open to another species that is as colorful, active, and hard as a peacock.

Thanks in advance.

g smithii are a quite similar smaller version, perfect for many people such as yourself. That of course leads to quite a demand for something colorful and small- being that it doesn't reach 1/3 of the size of their 10gal.

G. smithii reaches a maximum size of around 8-9 cm. O. scyllarus gets to 16.5 cm.

O. havanensis is a bit more difficult to keep than O. scyllarus.
