Peacock Paradise Buildup!

At this point I think your best bet is to make sure you have good test kits and verify water quality.

Are you using RO/DI water that is 0 tds? I don't understand why you are still having cyano outbreaks after all this time.

I would get a good copper test just to 100% verify there is no copper in the aquarium and run a poly filter for a while

If you do have good quality test kits ( Salifert or Elos ) and then all your parameter check out for you, I would have someone else with good kits verify. I have seen multiple times that you can get a bad kit with any brand.

Also are you using a fully calibrated refractometer and verifying salinity?

Is it possible you have stray voltage in the tank?

Have everything double checked at minimum. If all that checks out after double or triple checking, then I would say what you have gone through is bad luck, but only after all that.

Hope you get everything figured out.

I have always used ro/di water, nothing else. I haven't had cyano in a couple weeks now. Still trying to get my hands on some quality test, might have to order them online. I do have a refractometer and I calibrate it once a week with calibration solution. Don't know about stray voltage, never checked for that before. It's just weird I've never had anything else die in this tank.

That's good that you found out about your test kit. I tested the same water 3 times in one day to verify it was my kit that was bad. 2 @ LFS with the same results. And at home everything was reading zero. Good thing I found out before everything went south.

Do you have a clean up crew in your sump? I run Chaeto, Mangroves and 60+ nassarius snails ( these guys will seek out anything that is dieing). And numerous hermit and other snails.

2 of my mantis lives in this 6( 5 gallons each) partioned frag tank. One mantis at each end. And you can see the sump on the bottom.

This one lives in a 14g biocube with 30 nassarius snails. They actually help with the kill of a fiddler crab and take care of the Carcass. I highly recommend them in any Mantis Shrimp tanks. Great Cleaners, to have in the sump or display.

Depending what your Mantis likes to eat.
#1 loves hermits, so he lives with Nas Snails and Turbos, 14g biocube

#2 loves any snails, so he lives with hermits. - Nas in the same sump.

#3 just kills everything he gets his smashers on... lol - Nas also in the same sump.

Im sorry to hear your loss. I went through 3 before finally getting one that stayed alive. Its funny how they are so delicate when they first arrive but once they settle in, they are indestructible. I would keep your hopes high and possibly wait till spring or summer roles around. With as cold as it can get, the fatality rate rises more.

Hey SJ. I live in Albuquerque but occasionally go out to Phoenix to visit my sister. When I was there about 2 weeks ago I went to a store in Tempe called Pets Inc.. They had a small peacock (2") that was a special order and they said they had a good supplier that could get them in anytime. Might want to give them a try.....

I don't think water quality is to blame with your loses. Terrible to lose stuff as I've lost stuff in my beginnings. I had a peacock in a 20h with just a normal light, and weak powerhead and a hangon filter. No problems at all..i also purchased mine at a LFS. I just figured they were very hardy. I rarely did waterchanges and the water changes I did do was of old water from my reef tank. I assume once acclimated, they are very hardy and resilient to changes.

Good luck in your future searches. They really are cool animals.

Really sorry about your losses SJ, I think it was a fluke and you got two bad peacocks... But keep your head high and be lookin out for another! BTW you tank looks sweet, I am about to buy a 40 gallon breeder from a friend and am going to make it a mantis tank. Your tank has giving me some great ideas.

Whats the chances... When mantis shrimp come in as hitchhikers you cannot seem to get rid of them and they reak havoc in your tank. But when you want a mantis shrimp it dies...

Hey SJ,

My setup is almost the exact same as yours now as I upgraded to a 40B. I have the same stand but recently aquired a much smaller sump (24x10x16) and I could not wedge it in to save my life. How did you get that big ole sucker you have in there? Did you remove some of the bracing?

I had to remove the top brace and fit it in sideways before I put the 40b on top. HTH

Well figured I would give an update, lotsa thing have changed on this tank. Here's the most recent pic with my new scape and light, enjoy:
