Pennsylavania Emmisions question from a fellow reefer in Florida.

Hello Pennsylavnian's... I have a question to ask....

In Northampton County Emmisions inspection is required for all vehicles. I have a 2008 Acura TL registered in that county. The vehicle however will be in florida for the next 2 1/2 years. What I wanted to know was what happens if you fail to participate in the Emissions test?

I called the PA D.O.T and I said " I would be away from PA for 1 year, what happens if I don't do the emmissions test?" She replied, "As long as you do it when you get back". I couldn't get out of her what happens if it isn't done period. anyone know?

I guess your the best person to answer the question though as your a Police Officer in P.A correct? lol

Well, Florida can't stop you for an out of date PA state inspection. As long as the car is registered in PA and has up to date tags while in Florida, you just have to get it done when you get back into PA. however, if you come back to visit in PA and your inspections are out, then you'll be out some cash!

Tom is right, they cant enforce Pa inspection regulations. There is no time in that 2 1/2 years to get an emissions done tho ? You will also need a state inspection

I had this same issue about 10 years ago. No emmissions then though, mind you. I was away at college. flew home eevery time. When I did finally bring the car home. I was pulled over 2 miles after crossing into the state. Explained the situation and I was given a card and a 10 day grace period to get the inspection finished. Then 2 days later I went to the local police office with new inspection proof and the card. They signed it and I believe faxed it ( i doubt they mailed the card) to the issuing office.

They can still give cards like that. i've signed a couple already. All depends on what kind of mood the cop is in that pulls you over. I think it's a $150 or $200 fine if they aren't in a good mood! bmac would know more about that.

What do you mean by you will also need a state inspection? This is something different? If so please explain!

There is no time not because of time-restrictions but of mileage restrictions, it is a lease so I don't want to drive 1200 miles from FLA to PA for an inspection if its not absolutely necessary you know what I mean? Yes I will be back and forth in those 2 years to PA but I will fly, cheaper, faster, and much more efficient than driving......

Also bmac, along with the state inspection your talking about, are there any repetitive processes in place in the state of P.A in regards to vehicles besides having to renew your registration once a year (which can be done online) ?

Well, the deal with PA's inspections are you need to have the emissions test done on the car BEFORE you can get a state inspection sticker. For our inspections, we have to check lights, wipers, steering and suspension, brakes, etc. etc. for it to pass. this has to be performed once a year with a valid owners card and insurance card. Emissions for your car is farily simpl. we perform a gas cap check and hook into the OBDII, run the car and the computer reads the VIN of the car, if there are any codes/check engine light on. As long as the car has good plates on it (registration) and insurance and is licenced in PA, you should be okay in florida with an expired inspection sticker. however, you will have to have the car registered every year. not sure what your doing in florida, but if you own a house down there and have an actual address in florida, some things may change.

No I don't just going to school in Florida.....

Well I figured to register the car I can just do it online and it can be sent to my house in P.A and someone can mail me the new stuff, that can be done no? Or does PA require the car to be present at the DMV or somethin for registration? I figured you have online registration no?

That is to simply renew it (as its just registered)? Whats the process for that?

yes, you can renew your registration online, pay by CC, and print out a temporary "card". i think they are good for like 15 days or something like that.

So to get the permanent registration they don't send it to your house?

I can print out a temporary card but I won't be able to get the actual card or do they mail it out?

Oh ok, well I won't get fined in florida, just there so I'll be ok...

You can get the actual card, but they are going to send it to the address on the card (ie. where it is registered). you won't be able to have it mailed to Florida cause they won't put a Florida address on a PA registraion card.
