people eaters

what make them people eaters?
theres purple, turquoise, orange, red... an I SWEAR I have the oranges in my tank :)

but, what makes them 'people eaters'? to me, they look just like any other zoanthid. Is it just a marketing scam for the tuquoise, orange, and red to sell them since the purples are/were so popular?

People eaters are what is or will be termed zoanthus gigantus, they have a larger polyp with a green mouth. All PEs that I have seen and have all have a neon green mouth.

Compared to a normal zoanthids 2-3x, most zoanthids are about the size of eraser heads on a pencil, where as the polyps of a mature polyp of the PEs can get up to the size of a dime to a nickle.

ummm, maybe someday? I can get the bro-inlaws camera and see if it'll zoom. but they aren't too big, just the size of other zoos around them
I have wierd zoanthids, one of which looks like a blue and brown camo, then the one that looks JUST like the orange people eaters from that one site... (zoaid or something?) but from the bigger description, probably not it.

I'd like to add to this discription, they need to have a green slit for a mouth.

why do they need the green slit? i have come across a frag of blues that look to have a white-ish mouth... when the polyps close, there are the typical white marks that PE's have... i thought THAT was the telling mark on whether the polyp was a PE or not.... not the mouth.

If it doesn't have a green slit for a mouth, it just isn't a pe.

just look at mfinn's avatar. That is a PE. The bright green mouth is the best way to tell. And when the polyp closes up you should see little white lines on the top of it.

i dont think the mouth is a requirement.... i thought the most telling sign was the white marks on the closed polyp... i thought that alone was the identifier of a PE... am i wrong?

That is correct Blitz...The white line that run down the stolen from the edge of the polyp oral face when closed, is the identifier of the Zoanthus gigantus....Although it has not been formally accepted.

People Eater description comes from the original Purple People Eater which was purple with a green mouth. Later, folks called other zoas with green mouth, "XYZ People Eater" based on their color. So you have Red People Eater, Green Stardust People Eater, etc.

The white marks are indicative of Z. gigantus. PE zoas are Z. gigantus. Not every Z. gigantus is a People Eater. AoG is not a PE, for example.

so it's basically like a venn diagram in logic... the blue is z gigantus, the red are palythoas, and teh yellow are PE's

If I remember correctly, all of the Z. gigantus classified were of what most consider PE's-neon green slit mouth with the white striping on the underside of the polyp when closed. Does anyone have one with the white striping on the underside, but no green slit mouth (pics would be awesome)? That would be an interesting addition to the conversation, for me at least. We could go to jreimer and see what he thinks.
