Palm Bay fire causes $20,000 in damage

FLORIDA TODAY

A fire possibly touched off by an electrical power strip caused $20,000 in damage to a Palm Bay mobile home this morning. No one was inside at the time of blaze.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue responded to 236 Holiday Park Blvd. around 9:20 a.m. after a neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the rear of the structure, spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and dining area and extended through the roof, Martinez said.

Further investigation revealed an electrical power strip connected to the fish tank that may have malfunctioned.

ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œItââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s important to remember when using these power strips to make sure they arenââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t overloaded,ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ said Fire Marshal Mike Couture. ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œItââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s also important to check to make sure the wires are not frayed which can cause arcing that can trigger a fire.ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚
