At the risk of being silly (Hitchhiker's Guide) ---always know where your towels are. Keep a dedicated stack of them somewhere near. And have a carpet water alarm (amazon.com) that will scream bloody murder if you have a water leak. Use hose clamps: don't rely on hose barbs alone; and otherwise---I've had my tank on carpet for decades and different tanks and never had an issue.

Cool thanks guys. I am keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a 150 gallon or larger. My carpet is a beige color and we just purchased the house. I will be cautious and always put down a towel when I am working on the tank. My parents have a steam vac they never use so I will ask if I can keep it at my house from now on.

I have my tank on carpet as well and I keep hand towels and rags next to the tank at all times. I also have Bissell Little Green for sucking up liquid spills. Came in really handy when my 30g mixing bucket tipped over.

Yeah, you'll be fine with that. I would add putting a runner with rubber backing in front of the tank is a good idea. Not so much for spills, but stains. It is inevitable that some thing that stains will spill, plus damp/wet slippers/shoes will tranfer dirt easily. Better on a mat than on the carpet. You can get one that matches the tank and decor, even. Here's mine. Like you, I also have a carpet that is mostly beige .

My tank has been on carpet for 7 yrs. overflowed the sump once. Always put beach towel down when changing water, The carpet is dirty in front of the tank because all of the grandparents stand there and watch the fish. There is no odor or anything like that.
