Peppermint Angel

If I were to get this fish here is what I would have for a setup:

90-125g single specimen tank
1-3 cleaner shrimp
A single "cooler" color florescent light
100+ pounds of VERY mature live rock with sponge and other goodies on it
a couple of good powerheads
A 1/2 hp chiller (just in case)
A dedicated generator just for the tank
Optimum temperature - 66-68 degrees

Feeding (2-3 times a day) - cyclopeez, tiny spirolina brine, mysis

And a sweet nurse shark companion. Duh.
 
One issue with one large oversized chiller would be that chillers can stick on just like heaters (and controllers that would try to prevent this). Charles Delbeek told me they got a ridiculously oversized 10 HP chiller for one of the large systems in Waikiki... it stuck on and dropped the temp I believe into the high 50s... two redundant smaller chillers, as are with the existing pepp now, would be ideal... having a UPS, generator, or combination are also a necessity as Chris mentions... and are really a necessity for all of our systems... ask yourself now, "would I be able to run appropriate circulation and life support on my tanks for up to a week should I have no electricity?"

Actually, everytone shoudl think this NOW for their current setup too- not just a dream setup. I know that I could with mine. How about yous guys.

Chris- a great white would be aweful. Didnt you ever see "Jaws"? There is no movie about killer nurse sharks though. Therefore, they MUST be safe.

As for mine, my house is run on a backup generator so I would be ok...for this fish, I would have a dedicated generator because of the "if's" that may come up...it would be like buying an Enzo Ferrari and getting a oil change plan at Jiffy Lube :wildone:

For the great white...I know Jaws made some bad waves about these gentle fish...in the case that he doesnt get along with the Boylei, I have some really good egg crate to section off the tank...:lolspin:
 
I think a tank that needs to be keep that cool would be perfect for a basement tank.

My finished basement is always around 68-72 degrees (if not cooler) and with the minimal lighting requirements, it should be easy to keep the tank in the proper temperature range. In fact, it could probably be achieved with fans.
 
Yes, but you would still need to plan for the day when it is 110 degrees outside and that basement isn't so cool anymore... :)

DFS LA doesnt determine what the cost of the fish, they need to buy it too. And then they mark it up, as completely appropriate. If you think they are being greedy, buy it from another source....oh wait, you cant. Their price will be inline with exactly what it should be, and it would be worth it, for the risk, effort, and care they put into it.

And the second issue is a topic beat to death. I assume someone will buy it up, and hopefully quickly. And to be honst, I hope they DONT post it here. Because it will bother me when people criticize the purchase.

:lmao: Jeremy- We all know you will be more than happy to argue with whomever should post that thread. As past threads have shown, the expensive, rare specimens that are offered will draw these criticisms, it is only natural. Not all RC members are of the same means and tax bracket and therefore I fully expect there to be threads dedicated to the Peppermint whenever it is offered. My suggestion, start stocking up on some strong sedatives in order to help you through that difficult time :thumbsup:

No worries, I am steering clear. Im sure quite a few people will be happy about that.
 
There is something to be said for being one of an extremely small number of people to have or accomplish something.

I experienced this through my son a few years ago. He placed 4th in the National Spelling Bee. The monetary reward was very small, but the ability to know that he did something very few people can or will ever accomplish is a memory that will last a lifetime. I have heard critism of how hard these students work and all they can do is spell, which for the most part is a meaniless skill.

Owning this fish would be similar and I don't think you can really put a price tag on it. Yes, I know that price will be somewhere around $25,000 but knowing there is only one other specimen in captivity might very well be worth it! So whatever critism would come is well worth it!
 
It would be awesome to have the following tankmates for the boylei, as these also require cooler temps:

centropyge ventralis
Anoplocapros lenticularis
Centropyge Interruptus

Although the interruptus may be too aggressive and the flame boxfish may poison its tankmates..
