Percula question with pic's

how long did you have them for because i got a true perc for about 3 months now and he only got a little bigger but not any darker. he looks a little lighter than when you first got yours.

Is yours captive bred or wild caught? Mine are wild, so they may be much older than yours. I bought a captive bred perc about the same time and it hasn't changed much yet. It has very little black.

The LFS swears they are wild caught.

Not trying to be an [profanity] but i would not shop there anymore. we have a local reef that guys come from NY and all over take from it and sell it that sucks. Our uncw (local unives) breeds and frag all sorts of marine goodies. Not rying to start stuff. I was talking to a marine biost the other day and he was a big time local diver that had been for many yrs and he said the local reefs he went to, were getting smaller and smaller. It just seems like it might not be there for my kids.

sorry if i sound like a tree hugger

fish look good they are the better looking clowns

I don't think I understand your post. What good would it do for me to stop shopping at that LFS? It wasn't their fault the fish died.

yea but they are taking from the wild. That just like my uncle, he is a deer hunter thats belives in running dogs to chase deer, that means anything that gets in front of the dogs has to die to stop/catch the dogs.

If that fish store keeps buying from a guy thats just goes out and catch a boat full of nice fish and sells them to YOU, vrs and orginazation that raises the fish. Which is better, captive to captive, than wild then captive.

I think that with occelaris and percs, because captive raised are so easy to get, we all have a duty to buy the captive raised ones. For the very least that wild ones ship poorly and die as your unfortunate fish appears to have shown. Sorry for the loss.

So, I shouldn't buy from a LFS unless they deal exclusively in CB creatures???? Where am I going to find this LFS?

I have 12 clowns. 4 CB and 8 WC. The problem with CB clowns is the wide spread deformities that keep showing up. One can't help but wonder if all the inbreeding has something to do with it. Obviously, my plan is to breed the clowns I have. Should I continue the inbreeding and buy CB clowns exclusively, or should I widen the gene pool by breeding WC clowns?

Most of the CB "pairs" sold in this country are siblings. There's a very good chance that their parents were siblings as well, and maybe even their grandparents. Judging from your throne of responsible moral behavior, is this the practice that should be considered the "responsible" way of doing things?

I don't know of a single species of clown that is regularly imported into this country thats an endangered species.

Thanks for your condolences.

I agree with you. If someone just wants a pair of clowns to put in their tank and look pretty they should buy CB. However, I believe something needs to be done about the amount of inbreeding that takes place with clown fish.

Sorry i did not realise they were for a serious breeding project. What exactly did you have planned for them?
I'd hope that commercial breeders do actually get new wild caught pairs now and again qt them properly and try to alleviate inbreeding somewhat as opposed to impulse buying and chancing a death.

I may be completely wrong however.

No need for "sorry". I didn't take any offence from what you said. If you did mean any, it went right over my head.;)

Most breeders don't bother with purchasing WC clowns to mix up the gene pool. Quite the opposite actually. They find clowns with traits that are easily marketed and produce as many as they can. Inbreeding is the most productive way to accomplish this.

I have two pairs of perc's. The ones pictured in this thread and an ORA semi Picasso (which is without a doubt inbred) with a Solomon Island WC perc. They are all still pretty small. Hopefully they will grow and begin spawning. If all goes well, I will pair up the offspring from one pair with the offspring from the other.
