pet mart got hit

IMO, petmart tampa takes such poor care of their livestock that it could have easily been their own poor husbandry.

Either way it is a tradgedy.

Electrical current? Something that happens that fast should be detectable! Has anyone looked for shorts in any of the equipment?

This is what I'm always scared of at school -- some mean kid trying to be cool by throwing something in the tanks.

Sorry to hear about this. That's very sad. I hope this person has to repay everything and spend a few months in jail!

I like petmart and go there all the time for freshwater fish and dog food and also banfield for my dog. I cant believe somone in the right mind would do this. You must have cameras in the stores right? Well be on the look out for kids, because i would hope a grown up would never do this. Good luck on catching these punks.

Banfield = Petsmart

This happened to a pet mart... Awful news regardless of whether you agree with their husbandry practices or not :(

Could they have dumped some kind of household poison or something in there? I can't think of what chemical wouldn't alter the pH and other parameters.

j said they could have used cyanide or something, not to shore but I tried asking what he thinks, the thing is that if you hate somebody , don't take it out on the livestock, take it out of your ears,(woosaa, woossaa), and move on,but doing something like this is just plain wrong, yea you might have hurt him in money, but also money, comes ,money go's, and live animals shouldn't pay for this.

I'm a firm believer in the "If you don't agree with their practices, then don't support them". It truly is the best way to stop something that you feel is wrong. This is the same reason I will never buy anything from Petland.

However, I would never ever think of going into Petland and killing all their fish livestock and puppies, etc. That is just the wrong way to go about doing things.

There have been some "rumors" of this going on in some small stores in the area. Not sure if they're true, but they did prompt me to put in a full video surveillance system and separate security system on both the store and farm. Isn't it a shame that folks have to go to such lengths to protect themselves, living creatures and the people who depend on the store staying strong to support their families? Everytime we're forced to do something like this it adds to overhead and in the long run everyone suffers. How sad that our society is coming to this.

Extreme animal rights groups often believe that there should be no domesticated animals, and would probably believe strongly enough against fish tanks to do something like this.

why would animal rights group kill the animals,?
Because they figure if they put the business out of business that's one less place that will take from the reefs. My friend said that has happened in N.C.. Sick...I hope you find out who did this and how exactly they did it. And if you don't have camera surveillance, this might be something you should consider. So sorry , besides it being plain wrong to harm the animals..it must also be a big financial loss as well.

Well, someone recently said it was going on in NC...that some groups that think the hobby is destroying the reefs are trying to take down stores thinking they can drive them out of business. How sick to be a crusader for the environment yet kill to make your point! Take a look at some of the bioterrorism news and you'll see that there are some pretty twisted people killing and maiming in the name of saving life. Remember spikes in trees that were maiming foresters? Although I heartedly agree that we need to make sure that forestation is done in a systematic way that actually replaces what is removed (actually better for the environment as studies are showing that growing trees remove more CO2 than mature ones) I despise the practice of harming any living creature to save another and have been very particular with whom I've placed my allegiance in regards to conservation and the environment.

I've heard that dropping alkaseltzer in a tank could change the pH so fast it would kill everything and be hardly noticed :(

They think it was some kind of fertilizer because if u have ever been in there stores they cover most of there tanks. for some reason that day most of the lids were off so the only fish that lived were in tanks with lids. so they prob dropped the fertilizer in the tanks with no lids and it instantly killed those fish because it was so potent in those tanks and i guess they caught it before it recirculated to the tanks with lids on them so those fish werent effected as much

by the way "college" they actually take decent care of their fish i used to work at the bay pines pet mart and there systems might look algaeish but infact they were pretty damn healthy systems. very few fish were lost from poor water quality so get your facts right before u start to ridicule a store please

Many years ago I used to work at Pet Country down in South Florida and it was not uncommon for our competition (to send people in) to come in and drop pennies in the tank and otherwise sabbatoge our salt water systems.................
Its unreal, I have worked with all kinds of people and heard all kinds of stories, but people will never cease to amaze me by the things that they do.

The system had no electrical shorts. The way they died was not consistant with electrical shock. It all occured in one system. I have been overseeing the care of these fish for 2mo. now. We go through great lengths to keep them healthy and happy. I've been hand feeding many of the fish that died for months. It was very sad to see them all go. And of course, no aspect of poor husbandry, short of an oxygen depletion event, could kill these fish in the way they died. There is far more than enough aeration in the system to prevent that. I hope someone will be able to shed some light on who and why this was done.
