Pet peeve? Is it just me? Let your zoas grow!!!

Been Reefin'
Is it just me or does it drive some of you other guys crazy when people frag a frag. Always having tiny pieces of a million different varieties. I love variety, but let your colonies grow a little!!!

It's really not my business and I used to do that a little but I like the grown out look.

Rant off lol.

+1, you are most certainly not alone. It's one of many reasons I seldom if ever post anymore.

organism, you beat me to that thread as I was going to post it as well. Everyone needs to read that entire thread, you'll be totally enlightened. I'll post this one instead.

I like the picture threads titled "show your grown out zoas" that fill with hundreds of pictures of frag plugs and discs. Then in the mix are a couple large wild zoa rocks that were obviously not grown in someone's tank.

I think as a hobby people want to collect as many varieties they can and as a result don't let their colonies grow large. I would frag my colonies here and there before in the past and trade them off or sell them to others but its a lot of work. I am wondering if it is a maturing process in which mostly new reefers do this while older reefers let things grow and appreciate their accomplishments and beauty of the colonies.

I think maybe instead of complaining about small frags, lets show our colonies of beautiful polyps and aspire those who chop up small frags to grow them out. I truly for one look forward to the continued growth of my zoa island. Reminds me of armies of old clashing into one another.

Yeah that thread is hilarious. If your zoanthids are on a plug then it's not a grown out colony, it's called a bunch of zoanthids on a plug aka what we used to call a frag.

Having a bunch of water filled with rocks and overpriced Christmas ornaments is not an accomplishment, it is an embarrassment that takes little to no actual reef experience to pull off.

I find that Zoas are just like fashion. Over priced when the trends are hot and when the trend is not in demand or old news the price drops. I think people frag there frags because the trends of new our demanded and fetch top dollar. By the time the frag grows into a colony its old news and something brand new comes out. Just a different perspective.

I agree, I think that most people keep looking at their tanks expecting things to grow in so fast. If you let it sit and grow, you get bored with it. Don't mess with your tanks, forget about them from time to time and let the corals grow.

I agree. I think it's just about making a little money when the gettin is good, and probably depends on how long you've been in the hobby also.

Johnike has it right, forget about your tank, and as long as its automated you can turn your head. All the sudden you'll have something.

Let 'em grow.

Better take care of the aiptasia, did you grow that out yourself or is it one of those wild zoa rocks that piper27 mentions.

buying a large wild colony is not the same as growing out a frag. I would rather get a frag and grow it out then post large wild collect pieces. very common corals like those polyps should be aquaculture, leave the wild ones wild.

I didn't buy it, it was a gift.
Can we see your grown out frags?

Why the hell does everyone gotta get personal. John, I like that colony and would have bought it too. It's nice.

I love the idea of all grown out frags, but sometimes the wild colonies need to be bought...

then theres people like me who have tiny tanks so we're constantly fragging our frags. that's a whole nother story though. my 2.5g wouldn't look good with a big colony so i have many tiny frags to provide lots of color and make it look bigger. i always have to frag down my faster growing or more agressive specs like my galaxea and xenia. NOw, when you do the same thing as i'm doing, but in a normal sized tank, yeah it just looks stupid. thousands of 1 inch frags in a 100g tank just can't look that great! theres a balance....
