Pet peeve? Is it just me? Let your zoas grow!!!

The decision of how your tank will look like is yours. Thank God!!! LOL!!
I don't want to prove nothing in no thread. I'm just explaining what is going on. The fact of the matter is that plugged tanks are a normal thing today and that's just the way it is. So what? Let it be... Is your tank full of plugs? Good for you. I have nothing to do with that. Hope you're enjoying it. :D

Pleasure of learning the things they've learned, with serious topics from the "old timers" because they're gone! Please read the context.

Ok, use your cartoon names. No problem. I don't know who you're referring to, but perhaps you misunderstood his point? In the "old timer's" mind most of the time they're just trying to explain to you their point of view. Many times they don't mean to be aggressive. I'm not.

I didn't start this post. I don't have time and don't need to see many of the many plugged systems anyway, but we all should have the right to write here and try to expose the thoughts. Old timers or newbies... No matter.

The need of exposing the thoughts comes because the newbies won't know better. If they just got in the hobby they really think plugged systems are cool because they never had a chance to see something different. Not their fault!
They pay a lot of money for their single polyp white pedestals, making the hobby a disgusting money game. Truth spoken again!!!

Just enjoy your tank and be happy... As long as you really like it.
And people will be here to let you know what they think.
You won't change that!!

If you don't like this type of discussion please go to the "ID forum".
You'll find lots of plugs there and with their cartoon names as well. :D
That way you won't waste your time.

LOL, so after I state the truth (you really aren't willing to "understand") you jump to conclusions about what my tank looks like and what I like because I am not standing on your side of the fence.

The fact of the matter is people can set up their tanks any way they want and one thing they can be assured of is if an old timer did not do it for them then there is probably going to be something wrong with it and they can read about it in the zoa forum.

I am unsure if I would be considered an "old timer" or not, however I do prefer the look of an established colony as opposed to the look of a four polyp or less frag. I appreciate some of the morphs that are available now, but refuse to pay the outrageous prices that are being asked. I will often trade for frags once the fad wears off and the next "must have" comes around.

People on RC and in this hobby come and go. Those that have a crash often consider throwing in the towel. If you're in the hobby long enough, you'll likely experience what I'm talking about. You may then consider spending less on frags, and counting more on the relationships built through mutual enjoyment of this hobby.

I offer this comment not to be argumentative, but to share my perspective. I'm a businessman by trade and believe in supply and demand. More than happy to watch people spend ridiculous amounts on frags. I enjoy looking at the beautiful pictures posted. I also wait to see which morphs are hardy enough to survive in a captive environment.

Anyhow, carry on.

Hello Charles and Miguel... :wavehand: Long time, no see. :)

I didn't take any conclusions about your tank. That's not my intention at all. I don't really pay attention nor have time to judge tanks, but appreciate the diversity and the many ways of set ups. I think many would agree with me that we learn lots when we try to understand how people use their imagination with their tanks. That's very constructive to all of us. I'm just saying that anyone, including you, that has a tank he/she likes, should be happy with it and that's what matters.

There are many types of set up, yes. And every type has it's own beauty.
There is no rules to set up a reef tank and, by the way, beauty IS relative if you think different people will have different tastes. The respect to others comes here.

There are tastes for everyone.

That's not the point of the thread.

The original idea of reefkeeping is to resemble the natural environment. The beauty of ANY tank would be to have harmony and the original essence.

Nobody here is to say that you just CAN'T have a tank looking like a fridge shelf full of plugs on egg crate on the walls and a chiller. But many would agree that it's just not what would reproduce what you see in nature!

Do you want that? Fine?
Do you think that's fine? Good for you.
Would you like to appreciate that? Alright.
But there will be people here to tell you that's not what they've been thought.

Simple as that.

Just have fun with whatever tank you've got.

:hammer:

Hello Charles and Miguel... :wavehand: Long time, no see. :)

There is a huge contradiction in your post, my friend. :hmm4:

No contradiction. People can do what they want. It is their right as an American in their own pursuit of happiness. It amazes me what people spend, and I find it somewhat amusing. That does not mean that I would personally do it, nor advise others do it. In the end its their money and they can spend it how they choose.

Yep, now I know what you've meant.
I agree!
Free will, free speech and action!
Free country, thank God!

I completely agree. If people want to spend crazy money on a Krakatoa by all means go for it. If they want to frag it every time a couple polyps grow to get their money back, by all means go for it.

Since you guys are zoa guys...does anyone have some good frags for sale WORTH THE MONEY?? lol

I always have frags for sale. :) I just don't have the guts to ship. Usually just sell to those in my club or through craigslist.

I think this a relatively new phenomenon with what I call the "biocube generation." Typical scenario: a polyp or two for sale at full retail with a cell phone pic of the mother colony (more like a MTV teen mom) with 4-6 polyps on it.

I just call them teen moms instead of mother colonies.

In my local group I actually give my corals, fish etc. FOR FREE. as a DBTC contribution to the group.

Its a pay if forward arrangement. for me with stipulation that any coral that you get from me you cannot sell, trade or hype in any forum. Once you have grown said coral, you can only pass it forward to other members in the same manner and requirements as you have received it. its' been years since I've sold coral and have stopped as to me its a hobby, not monetary part to keep up in the hobby and stay in the hobby.

Everything that past few years since then instead of selling I turned around and gave it for free.

I really like this idea. I still like to get my initial outlay back because there is something nostalgic about getting everything for free. :) I do give my polyps away to friends but you turned a light on for me. I think I might talk with our merchandise person for the local club and see about putting frags in the raffle during meetings. Help raise money for the club and help drive more people to the meetings.

I go by this motto

A hobby is a regularly undertaken activity that is done for pleasure, typically, during one's leisure time. Hobbies can include: the collection of themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, playing sports, along with many more examples. By continually participating in a particular hobby, one can acquire substantial skill and knowledge in that area.

Generally speaking, a person who engages in an activity solely for fun is called an amateur (or hobbyist), as opposed to a professional who engages in an activity for reward. An amateur may be as skilled as a professional, the principle difference being that a professional receives compensation while an amateur does not.

So for me when its in the BOLD, I stray away from whats in bold.

this thread makes me think of that girl crying saying leave britney alone LO ...

"leave old timers alone ..... "

lol

I like reefs full ... so when I set up, I get the cheaper and EX -LE corals ... let them grow and fil up my reef. once that is done, then I can cut pieces off, and trade with newer models ... I too hate ppl who frag a frag and look at this hobby as a business ... [a business that makes no money I should add]

I'm inclined to agree with what's in BOLD as well.

Mooch

Yep, as I've said before, people need to decide what category they fall into: hobbyist or trader.

If they just get on their own posts they could discuss this better and try to decide what they're doing.

The two categories exist and no one can deny. We do have to respect others own ideas and choices, but here is my opinion. Please respect it too. :D

It is true that everyone can do whatever they want!
But it is true that we can express our feelings here and try to help others that way too.
There are many confused people out there with this "cartoon named hype one polyp per white plug huge priced new idea".

If the trade won't change, the essence of the reef keeping won't change either and this type of discussions won't end!!!! Reefers won't see plugged systems as a display. Never. Sorry!! They are only frag tanks. :hmm4:
Frag tanks are acceptable and many times it's good to have one. That way we could trade the frags with friends in local clubs. That was the original idea!!!

You just can't call yourself a hobbyist if you buy willing to grow and sell for a profit!!!
And you won't be happy with your reef either, because it's not a reef, but an ugly plug holder. :deadhorse: With all the respect.
Just close your eyes and remember that tank. Is that a reef? NO, I know...
LOL!!!

The guys in between are the worse. They get the idea that they are reefing but when they look at their own tanks they see something far from it. They wonder if that's really normal, like almost every of their friends claim to be. Confusion is in their minds!!! Most times it's not their fault. They are just newbies. The problem is that plugged systems are becoming so very normal and worshiped nowadays, that they even get published as an ideal display set up. Sad, very sad...
Well, it's a free country... and many here collect items. They do what they want. So the real reefers will continue to call them collectors, or traders.

I write this with respect, besides been disgusted with the idea and price$$$.
Hope you all understand my point here.

I see so many kids with their ugly tanks locally that I feel very, very sorry for them. And the internet prices are coming to the local stores too!!! :thumbdown
I do respect them and try to help, but their goals for their tanks are so far from reefing that their language is only restricted to: PLUGS, LIGHTS, WATER CHANGES, PRICE$. :hmm1:
