Pet peeve? Is it just me? Let your zoas grow!!!

The hobby has moved on to collecting. Collecting is a lot of fun and so is trading. Hard to have a colony of the morph that everyone wants and asks you for and not frag it. With online access and people finding it easier and easier to ship corals you're not limited to just your LFS for corals. The market is overwhelming with different zoas now and it's difficult to not want to collect them all when you start collecting them. This is why some people have frag tanks and displays. Let them grow out in the display and then keep the frags in the frag tank. But not everyone has that luxury... And then there's also that part where a lot of people don't even stay in this hobby long enough to start off with a frag that will grow into a colony. A lot of people come and go since it's easy to be discouraged when you see your money literally go down the drain.

I'm very guilty of this "let it grow" thing in terms of having a different morph within less than an inch of each other, both my zoas and sps. It's just I have the hardest time trying to choose favorites. It's like "I like this one, but I also like this one. And this one is really nice too..." Short term it's fine, but I cannot fit a mini colony of all my pieces. Eventually when things start to compete for space I'll have to choose favorites. A way I stop myself from being tempted from fragging is to actually glue the frag onto the rock and let it grow onto the base rock. It becomes very difficult for me to frag afterwards and less likely I'll frag them.

But I understand this thread, I really despise and hate my display when it looks more like a frag tank. I'm also guilty of the frag racks hanging in the tank. :(

Why are you people constantly trying to tell other people what to do with their tank and corals? If someone wants to keep fragging a frag who cares, you don't have to look at it.

I think maybe instead of complaining about small frags, lets show our colonies of beautiful polyps and aspire those who chop up small frags to grow them out. I truly for one look forward to the continued growth of my zoa island. Reminds me of armies of old clashing into one another.
+1 for this. It gets so annoying hearing all the complaining of the "old timers" who have seen every morph possible, cannot stand names, cannot stand frags, etc. It just seems they get grumpier and less capable of understanding their way is not the only way.

I would say that we all need to try understand each other.

The old timers are actually trying to get the real deal back, which is probably not going to happen, unfortunately. It's gone too far.

The new style is the ugly unhappy type of "reef" with those plugs everywhere and never ending buying, spending fortunes to try to impress others.
Truth spoken! Ugly fruit shelves with blue lights and egg crate all over!

This IS already getting too much and, I agree, like I've said before, we all still need to respect other's point of view, BUT it is still ok to expose our thoughts.

The thing is that the so called "old timers" do want to wake you up to the reality and so you could picture what a nice reef tank would look like. Pleasure to the eyes and proud to watch it grow. Not overpriced pieces of zoas on the market.

But there are many blinds that really don't want to see that, or want to ignore their own frustrations!!

The old timers want to help everyone here to understand and give the right value of keeping zoas, as in their natural environment, and want to see people talking about serious subjects, not cartoon name$$$.
They want the best for the new generation and they want the hobby to grow, not to be receded.

Many "old timers" are gone from here and the newbies won't have the pleasure to know many things they've learned, and would like to teach, because for the newbies, the cartoon names are more important.
This is very sad!

The problem I see is that you guys state we should all try and understand each other but the fact of the matter is that the old timers aren't willing to do so. You prove it in this thread where you try to make the decision for all what a "nice reef tank would look like".

You also state the newbies won't have the "pleasure" of learning. Well I will be honest, coming from this thread alone it is clear to newbies that if they have a tank that doesn't look the way the old timers want it to then the discussion and "learning" will be no pleasure at all.

There is an old timer here and I cannot remember his name (eichler or soemthing) but it was no pleasure at all when he posted here a few months ago. He stated the same as you, tired of what is going on and even stated that he doesn't care about the newbies because they don't know the exact difference between zoa and paly. Yeah, reading those posts of his were real pleasurable.

If you want to "try to understand" everyone then quit starting posts talking about what you hate to see.

Telling or educating?
What other way are you implying?
Do you have suggestions?
I don't find the OP attempting to educate at all. It comes across to me that he is telling us what he doesn't like to see and how he has grown past that period in his own reefing "career". He even goes so far as to tell people to let their frags grow out. What if that is never the intention of the person with the frag?

A suggestion would be to be less condescending when offering your opinion. If someone asks for it offer it, otherwise what purpose is it serving other than to rant? What benefit does the board have if it is full of rants? Find out what the intention is of the person with the tank you are referring to.

When I buy expensive coral my intent is to frag a piece of it and allow both to grow. One to grow on rocks as part of my reef and one to grow on a frag so that I can frag it and get my money back. The people local to me rather enjoy getting $30-70 polyps for $5-15. Once I get my money back then I drop the price even more but I always keep that frag to frag from and keep my main colony growing out. My wife is not going to allow a separate tank to grow frags so they both stay in the same tank.

I think eveyone needs to grab a beer!

I shouldn't have said I was on a rant. To be honest I really don't care what other people have, and I think newbie's have to start somewhere. In my opinion I'd rather have a grown out frag than a large colony, but that's just me.

As eg8r210 stated about fragging his frags to have two colonies is totally different than what I'm talking about.

If you are a newbie and/or are in the process of growing out a tank then don't even pay attention to what I'm saying...maybe I should have said it clearer.

It's when I see a tank that has been setup for 3 years and every zoanthid has 4 polyps and they have frag plugs for sale with one polyp on them, but there again...I understand the obsession!!!! It's hard to pick a favorite!

Just to lighten the mood I'll post a pic of my newly setup tank with like 5 tiny frags in it...You may not even be able to see them, but I won't touch them until they are quite a bit bigger...at least I'm going to try not to!!

I was out of the coral hobby for a few years after marriage/kids, etc. and don't have much to show, but just got my new tank running and starting to add some stuff. It'll be mainly zoas, acans, micros, and blastos...

The decision of how your tank will look like is yours. Thank God!!! LOL!!
I don't want to prove nothing in no thread. I'm just explaining what is going on. The fact of the matter is that plugged tanks are a normal thing today and that's just the way it is. So what? Let it be... Is your tank full of plugs? Good for you. I have nothing to do with that. Hope you're enjoying it. :D

Pleasure of learning the things they've learned, with serious topics from the "old timers" because they're gone! Please read the context.

Ok, use your cartoon names. No problem. I don't know who you're referring to, but perhaps you misunderstood his point? In the "old timer's" mind most of the time they're just trying to explain to you their point of view. Many times they don't mean to be aggressive. I'm not.

If you want to "try to understand" everyone then quit starting posts talking about what you hate to see.
I didn't start this post. I don't have time and don't need to see many of the many plugged systems anyway, but we all should have the right to write here and try to expose the thoughts. Old timers or newbies... No matter.

The need of exposing the thoughts comes because the newbies won't know better. If they just got in the hobby they really think plugged systems are cool because they never had a chance to see something different. Not their fault!
They pay a lot of money for their single polyp white pedestals, making the hobby a disgusting money game. Truth spoken again!!!

Just enjoy your tank and be happy... As long as you really like it.
And people will be here to let you know what they think.
You won't change that!!

If you don't like this type of discussion please go to the "ID forum".
You'll find lots of plugs there and with their cartoon names as well. :D
That way you won't waste your time.

No you are not alone in this pet peeve.
As Mucho Reef says
Anyone can build a reef.....the greater challenge......is to grow one!
