Petco rescue operation

I went into petco yesterday to get some catfood, and decided to swing by their fish department. Ugh. Alot of them were dying, floating in unatural positions, and all of them looked like they had been chewed on by a dog. This made me very upset, and angry, and I started to come up with ideas to try to do something about it. I thought of something, and grabbed the nearest employee, betting that he only knew what clownfish were. I asked him if all the assorted damsels were really just $4.99. What a deal! I told him I would take 2 purple flower damsels, which were actually black cap grammas. Did you know in Fiji, they catch purple flower damsels by the hundreds, and make the males fight to the death for entertainment and gambling purposes? Its awful. Yes, he had heard of that. Now, alot of you might consider this stealing. I consider it no different than tricking a kidnapper into releasing their abductees. They wont be making any money from them anyway, because they wont survive more than a week. im going to rehab them, talk to some people at my lfs, and find them homes.
Anyway, I wanted to put this out there for people with an empty quarantine tank and a desire to save some animals from death row. this will probly work at most of their stores.

The better solution is to not support them at all. Fish may die, but it's pretty simple, if they don't sell marine fish, they won't carry them. They are a business first and have no concern for the well being of marine animals. Unlike a LFS owner who is probably a hobbyist himself.

A LFS is likely the only place where the owner is going to care about the well being of the animals.

^^ That.

(Emphasis mine.)

Ditto. I've actually stopped spending any money at Petco after I found out they carry saltwater fish. I generally buy food and other stuff for my 4-legged furry critters at a local pet shop anyway, but I used to occasionally buy cat litter and other random supplies at Petco... no more.

LA lists the black cap basslet at 69.99. You go into a Petco, and in your "anger" you ask an employee with little to no knowledege of saltwater fish, who probably makes minimum wage, to sell you two basslets at the price of a damsel. You also ignore the plight of the remaining "distressed" fish and plan to leave their rescue to others. I guess you sure showed them.

I did not read where you asked to see the manager and offer some advice to help with the fish. For that matter, you did not talk to the employee about good husbandry. Instead, you took advantage of his/her ignorance to benefit yourself.

[sarcasm]Congratulations on your concern for the welfare of these fish. [/sarcasm]

Its not to benefit myself. Im going to rehab them and give them to my lfs who i discussed my plan with when theyre healthy. If the manager doesnt know that upside down fish with no fins arent abnormal, I dont believe they care. Im going to do what I can, instead of being a [sarcastic] troll. And ill do it as many times as I can. Cant convince me im wrong if we cant have a productive discusion, dood.

I reread your original post and made a mistake in reading it. I see you will NOT benefit from your actions. I apologize for my mistake.

I believe I can assume that you will not get a store credit from your LFS for the basslets that you give him/her because you do not stand to benefit from your actions. However, someone else will benefit from this. If the LFS sells these for any price, they will benefit because there is no cost to them. If the LFS gives these away, then the ultimate consumer of these two fish benefit because they get a $70 fish for nothing. In the end, you cheated Petco out of $110 revenue (using LA price), for some altruistic motive which Petco does not even know about.

I am not condoning what Petco does. I am also not condoning what you did. As someone else stated, the best action is to not buy anything.

If you feel that I am a troll because you do not like someone criticizing your actions, then so be it. You may be able to justify your actions to yourself, but some of us see this as nothing more than stealing. Remember, karma is a *****. Good luck.

calm down white knight. how is rescuing a doomed fish from a murderer immoral? i suppose you have a problem with people who free slaves too.

Yeah, i was kinda annoyed by your statement, its ok. I appreciate that you apologized. Sorry for responding with more sarcasm. I have a good relationship with the owner of my lfs, shes going to either put people in contact with me for adoption, or sell them for the cost of maintenance. I know what im doing is morally ambiguous at best, but I think its right. Id never been to petco before, it was horrific. Im driven to do something, and this is what im going to do.

I understand your frustration with the large pet store chains. I don't think we have Petco in Canada (might in other regions) but locally we have a chain that I wont buy any live goods from, for the same reason you have cited. The treatment of the livestock is abhorrent. Like you, I have a good relation with my LFS (3 in my area) and deal with them almost exclusively. Good luck nursing them back to health.

It's pretty simple: The more fish people buy from Petco, the more Petco will order to adjust for demand.

If every one of us on RC would go into Petco and buy 2 fish a week to rehome, guaranteed they'll notice the increased demand and increase supply (resulting in more death). It's how retail works.

As for your slavery comment, it's completely out of line and not appropriate for this site.

I can understand your frustration and while I personally don't consider it stealing I don't think your helping fish on the broad scale. Petco sold two fish, hence now they will take two fish from the wild to replace the ones sold. If Petco sold no fish, they wouldn't be replacing inventory. I think organizing a boycott of Petco would be a better use of your time. Just my opinion, not condemning you for your actions.

Keep in mind, most of the profit of any pet shop is the dry goods. If you don't like how they keep their fish and other animals, don't buy their dry goods either ;)

Also buying a fish to "rescue" does ensure they look at the sales numbers and say "lets order more".
