Petco/Water Test/New Snowflake Clown

where is it that you people live that petco sells marine fish?? the petco and pet-smarts around me in New York do not and I wouldn't go to one of those stores for any reason anyway. even for my dog, their corporate structure cares less about the animals health and well being no matter what animal it is. they are a money hungry corporation and i would advise everyone to support small local business rather than them!! i dont care if they have a tank sale for $.50 a gallon they wont receive any of my business no matter what. the only reason they have those sales is to bring people in so they see the fish and buy them, which are probably filled with diseases and infections. the only way they will stop selling marine fish is if people stop buying them. so when you think your saving a fishes life by buying it form petco and making it healthy. think about how many new fish petco just ordered that will probably end up dying especially with water parameters that were posted here. sorry thats all end of rant. lol

The saltwater I guess is more a city thing by me. I am in Brooklyn/Queens. I am in manhattan most the time.

Yea The tank sale thing is for people to think they are saving money they buy a tank and then they have to stock it!

The fish to Petco is just the bait.

the reeling in is when they sell the hoods stands filters etc etc

My local PetCo is terrible. Every time I visit (killing time during lunch) I see dead fish in their tanks. Then the ones that are alive, are barely alive. Then half the time, they have ich all over them.

I don't understand how they can manage to keep the tanks that way. From a business stand point, that has got to be costly, because no one is going to touch those fish and they have got to be losing a ton of fish due to poor conditions.

they probably don't care. they maybe pay 10cents per fish if even =/

iI'm sure they have some kids in some tropical islands that they give them a coconut a day to find fish eggs or trap fish to distribute throughout the locations. Then when they make documentaries about problems in fish farming wild caught corals and fish, all you see are native people just sitting there smiling, and obviously a dude in a suit and tie wont be going there to collect the fish, they get boated in. so for documentaries to find the culprits they have to spend tons of time and money.

so in the end corporations OWN the world.

Which Petco was it? Burnsville, Minnetonka, Maple Grove? Do you usually go to World of Fish or Saltwater Empire?

Gilligan, I have bought every fish in my tank from SWE. I do occasionally go to World of Fish to pickup some LRS Reef Frenzy, but only buy fish from SWE. I also think World of Fish has a knowledgable staff. One guy specifically.

Update on my Petco Snowflake... It lasted about 3 days in the QT tank. It was from the Petco in Apple Valley, MN. I work in Woodbury, MN and that Petco keeps their tanks much cleaner and the fish look a lot healthier. Still wouldn't risk it though.

There is just no substitute in this hobby for reputible advice from an experienced reef store.

I was up in the Cities back in October and the salt section at World of Fish was in BAD shape. Nearly all the fish had Ich, and there were several tanks with dead/floating fish in them. I wound up pulling the trigger on a firefish that only had one ich spot on him as I was going to quarantine anyway. But, when the guy goes to get the fish out he tried to get me to take a firefish from a neighboring tank that was COVERED in ich spots. I'm like 'uh, no thanks, I'd like that one.' He seriously goes 'you sure? this one has great colors!' Needless to say, I probably wont ever be back. (My purchased firefish is coming out of quarantine this week after 8 weeks of hypo-salinity.)

I've had great luck at Saltwater Empire, though! Their fish always look super healthy and I've heard they quarantine their stuff extensively.

NB, I completely agree. I have seen ich on a ton of the fish at WOF. I actually mentioned it to my wife (who is supportive of my reef addiction) the last time we were there. Obviously there will be ich in all stores, I just thought it was an unusual amount.

Good luck with your firefish, Man.
