Pete's 210 build

You may want to turn the skimmer one more time so that you have better access to the cup.

Yeah, probably not going to happen, as then I couldn't fit unions between the outflow T and the sump, but it is a good idea. I have good enough access as it is.

Tank's looking Great Pete!!

What made you decide on adding the dead shrimp and ammonia? I have never been a big fan of cycling tanks that way.

Thanks.

I assume then, that you prefer the long drawn out cycling? or using a fish to cycle? Neither sounded ideal to me, personally. But hey, to each their own. ;)

The input is 25mm metric and the output is 50mm (I think) metric. Your skimmer should have come with adapters to standard sizes. I'm thinking about milling a 25mm to 1 inch spigot fitting on the lathe tomorrow, but, as for the output, I'm still trying to decide if I want to use the supplied adapter, or something else.

i only got one adapter , it fits the intake , i didnt get a big one for the output, there is a good website that has a bunch of cool pvc fittings i found, and has the metric converters, its also where i got my manifold i used on my closed loop.

thanks for the info

Never assume ;)

Nah, I like to use good Quality cured Live rock and go from there. I never use fish or suggest people use fish when/if cycling a tank. I cure my rock really well then dose it with some cycle or Stability for good measures. Doesn't hurt to feed Phyto to it as well after it's cured.

"to each there own"

That's what makes this hobby so good!!:D

I can also say that the longer you have dealing with marine tanks, you get a better grasp of the problems associated with not having patience. Even today, when I rush projects, the results usually turn out less than standard. Usually, it would of meant that I would of only had to wait an extra week or so.

Rob and Mark, what I find interesting is that there is some published data, both scientific and hobbyist, (I'll find the links later) about fishless cycling, but people on RC don't seem to reference it at all. It appears to me that this entire hobby is based upon starting with good cycled live rock, which is fine now (and has been my MO in the past).

However, with the Tonga rock ban going into effect in a few days, and previously the Hawaii and Florida bans on rock collecting, we are loosing our sources of liverock. I personally think that we need to mariculture rock anyway, but it will become a much more real issue in the next 5 years if I had to take a guess.

So, I'd like to see more data on the best way to populate a fresh tank with beneficial bacteria. So, I'm playing with this in my tank.

I bought some BIO-Spira yesterday and added it. Will post back details as the tank progresses.

BTW, my response to you, Rob, was a bit snarky. My apologies on the reread. I wasn't suggesting that you were taking bad approach, or even what it was, but just that I didn't want to cycle with a fish or someone else's liverock. I have plenty of my own that will get added once the tank is a little more stable, as most of it is heavily encrusted with coral.

July 27, 2008 - Making PVC fittings, yeah

I didn't like the PVC male to female adpater that came with my skimmer to adapt from 25mm to 1inch, so I made my own.

I'm going to be placing an order for some plumbing parts here in the next day or so, so hopefully, I'll be able to get the sump running next weekend?

No sweat Pete. I wasn't saying there is anything wrong with the Shrimp trick just not the method to my maddness!!

I too would like to see more and more Maricultured rock but unless they can figure out a cost effective way of doing it we are still several years out from that.

I try to tell my customers everyday about propagation and saving our hobby. I'm not your avg. fish store owner that just tries to sell you another product;) I try to teach, It's amazing how many people out there actually think fish are "supposed" to be replaced every few months!!

Yeah, I can count the number of fish I've lost on one hand, and the corals I've lost on the other. From everything that I've read, you need an ammonia source to propogate the bacteria, so straight ammonia was to get is started, while the shrimp decomposed, which should continue to fuel the bacteria. We'll see how well it works in practice.

It might be a bit premature, as I'm waiting for the test kit to finish sitting, but I believe that I have Nitrites now.

I guess I've been in this hobby too long :(

hey pete sorry for the delay been helping my buddy unload his new 600 gallon tank all day, but the website for the PVC fittings is www.flexpvc.com they have alot of cool stuff ive never seen at lowes or home depot, like true wyes, manifolds and distributors, and even the metric converters.

I placed two orders tonight for plumbing parts. A smaller order from FlexPVC.com and a much larger from BulkReefSupply.com. I'm hoping everything arrives by this weekend, so I can get started.

Thanks guys.

Tank params are as follows:
Ammonia: < 8 ppm (API)
Nitrite: > .25 ppm (API)
Nitrate: >10 ppm (ELOS)

So, the cycle seems to be coming along nicely after only 8 days. The high ammonia is due in part to my dosing Ammonia a bit too much early on. I read the suggested amounts and transposed a decimal place when dosing.
