Pete's 210 build

I think I have until Thanksgiving to get it done and the corner tank broken down. I think this will be cutting it close.

Pete, do you think the endcaps will be the source of most heat? I just assumed it was the lamp itself that I want to dissipate heat.

Dunno. I read somewhere (I think) that you need to keep the end caps cool, so that they don't overheat, but I imagine you want to dissipate heat from the entire unit.

I read that too. I even read somewhere that you actually need to keep the lamps at just the right temperature for optimal PAR output and efficiency. In fact, Oliver from ATI explained it here...although my brain started hurting just trying to follow it.

BTW, I'm loving the ironing board work bench. It is rivaled only by my trash can and weight bench saw horses! :D

P.S. When can I get my hands on that PAR meter?

October 4, 2008 - Half way done with the canopy fans

After test fitting the fans in the "holders" I reached the point of no return. Drilling my nice virgin canopy. I cannot go back now, but its okay, it turned out looking half-decent.

I matched a drill bit to the hole size at each corner of the fan and drilled from the inside out.

Then I located the center of the fan and drilled a pilot hole

Then I used a drill bit that recesses screw heads to enlarge the hole for the center of the hole saw bit.

I taped off the melamine to keep from creating extra scratches or "blow-out" in the finish.

Two completed holes, 6 to go.

I repeated on the other two for this side of the canopy.

And the finished holes.

What was left was unfinished plywood, that would take on water and swell, so I painted the exposed wood with a semi-gloss black for looks and protection.

I test fit two if the fans again, and voila.

With 4 of the 8 fans installed with fans grills.

Pete, did your grills come with your fans? I need to pick up just the grills and wonder where I can get them cheap.

Fry's for the grills, $2.99 for a pair.

Thanks, Pete! I'll be stopping by on my way home from work. I love that there is now a Frys in Roseville!

Wiring the fans is very easy. I just wired mine in parallel to a 12v DC transformer. Keep an eye out for 12v transformers at garage sales (can be had for less than a dollar), or pick one up at goodwill for around $3.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. I just gopt back from an overnight trip to LA to buy some fish. What a day!

Anyway, I've got 2 QT tanks set up at the moment, but probably not enough, so I'll have to set up some more tonight before I go to bed, and I've been up for going on 36 hours now.

I picked up the following for my new tank:

(7) Evansi Anthias
Powder Blue Tang
Blue Spot Jawfish
Purple Fire Fish
Copperband Butterfly
(2) Cleaner Shrimp
Sea Hare
Leopard Wrasse

I think that is it.

Anyway, amquel and Formalin-3 are my friends during QT.

Pictures to follow.
Pete, Out of curiousty how are the fish doing from the trip to LA? You had a lot of challenging fish and I was curious how they were doing? The BSJ is my favorite fish and I have never kept one alive mpre than a few weeks :( Typically I hear it is because of temp since they like a little cooler....your thoughts?

I can't wait to see the finished product Pete! You've put so much hard work and energy into this thing so far. I wish I had the dedication/skills/time/space/money to do that!

(7) Evansi Anthias - dead
Powder Blue Tang - thriving in my frag tank
Blue Spot Jawfish - dead (temperature related)
Purple Fire Fish - doing great in my 210
Copperband Butterfly - dead
(2) Cleaner Shrimp - fine
Sea Hare - unknown, probably dead
Leopard Wrasse - dead (wouldn't eat enough)

Pete...still dosing vodka?? If so we need to talk~!

Sorry we missed each other this weekend. I've not been dosing vodka lately, but the nutrient level in the 210 is almost non-existent. May start it again once the bio-load gets larger. I've got a few tangs to go it, as I start the switch over, so there will be a bit of poo:

Blue
Purple
Yellow
Powder Blue
Vlamingi (Big nose unicorn)

And I'd still like to get a few more...

Pete

Your alive LOL!!!

Any corals in the tank yet?

Post some pics with that new camera of yours!!!

I finally got my 6 48 inch T5's over my 125 frag tank and they look awesome!!!
