Pete's 210 build

Pete, did you ever consider going with an ATB skimmer. If yes, what made you pick the REEFLO over it?

Not really, because the price was soo much higher. Price was a major consideration. I was set on the MSX 300, but spent $300 more for the Reeflo.

It has been, huh... I spent the weekend laying floor tile in my office. I should be finishing the last few tiles tonight or tomorrow and then grouting this weekend. This has put a small damper on the progress of the tank. Call it a respectful period of mourning for the dead fish.

I'll post some pictures of the tile tonight. ;)

I need to get my ATO setup on the 210 soon, as I'm evaporating about 3 gallons a day, and there is nothing but a return pump putting heat in the tank. That said, I've seen my heaters on mid-day, so the tank is staying below 77-78 degrees most all of the time right now.

3 gallons a day WOW!!!

Ounce I got my temp below 90 and added my chiller my tank evaps about 1 gallon a day.

Before then it was 3 gallons a day.

Sorry about your fish.

So far I have lost the Lei trigger that choked to death on nori, the Titan baby and the Passer angel which I should have looked at before buying because it was doomed from the start.

Everything else is doing good.

I did lose my Jo JO's Copperband yesterday though.

I bet the tile looks good!!!

Pete, have you made any decisions on a DSLR? I'm in the research phase for one right now and curious what you are leaning towards and why.

Mark, based upon the features that I don't know I need, I'm really leaning toward the D40, if I can find it body only for a good price. I'll shoot a macro lens for tank shots, and therefore don't need autofocus on the macro. I'm looking at a good auto zoom lens to handle the vacation photos. The Nikkor 18-200mm VR looks nice for what I'd use it for, but at $650 is really pricey. I guess that is the price you pay to carry only 1 lens.

Mark, I want a small camera. I plan on using it as a replacement for my point and shoot on vacations and around town. Anything bigger than the D40/D60 just gets to be too cumbersome IMHO.

No point in buying a refurb when I can buy a used for about 300 on CL (when you can find them).

Well, accept for the assurance that you know a refurbed is in working order and has a warranty. You may be skilled enough to be able to handle a DSLR and determine its condition, but I'm not.
Have you handled the Canon rebel lineup? They are a smaller body like the D40. That was the main reason I started leaning towards the Canon 450D instead of the D80.

Replacing a point and shoot with a DSLR...you are crazy. I couldn't imagine lugging a DSLR during times that I just want a pocket camera. I tried doing this at DisneyWorld...big mistake.

Big difference with lugging a DSLR around is the bag you will be using. I have several buddies with DSLR but we all have different bags. We noticed the guys with the big bags/backpacks never take theirs out. You want a small enough bag to carry and have your gear you will be using. I have the Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW and love it. It's a small sling bag that I can swing around anytime to pull out my camera or store it. It has plenty of room to store my camera, 50mm, 105mm, 18-200mm, charger and Sony camcorder. Plus is has a pullover raincoat.

I have the unconditional warranty from Ritz. From what the lady told me, as long as I bring the parts back I should get a new camera if I break it. Plus you can bring it in and they can send it out for free sensor cleanings.

Hi Mike. I was looking at that exact same bag today. It looks like a good option for carrying several lenses, but still keeping the camera accessible. I was also looking at the Tamrac 519 Pro-Zoom Pak Holster Bag for just the camera and maybe 2 lenses for around town use.

[sorry to hijack your build thread, Pete.]

Sorry guys, I've been busy lately at work and around the house. I'm finishing some work in my home office, and then back to the tank. I'll have some updates shortly.

Thanks for checking in, I need the motivation right now!

Finished grouting my office, hallway and bathroom. Picked up some lumber required for the lighting on my tank and I'm off to Monterey tomorrow to take my daughter to the aquarium. I'll hopefully get to start putting the lighting together on Monday.

September 14, 2008 - It's been a while, but I'm back!

Work has been kicking my butt, school is back in session, my car was broken into and I've had a few "engineering" goofs with the lighting on my tank, but I'm back.

Hey, the weather is better, and summer is over, so everyone should be back at it. On the flip side, I'm spending less time on RC, as I've really tired of all the BS. No more 5+ posts per day for me.

I'll start with the bad.

I came out to see this about 2 weeks ago, one morning.

People have no respect. The jerk who broke my window made off with an older laptop, but left me with $1000+ in damage. I've had the window replaced, the interior cleaned and the car is heading into the body shop in the next few days to have the door repainted and the interior door panel replaced. Then I have to find a company locally that can re-tint the window using the same stuff as "my guy" in the bay area that did the windows originally. What a pain in the butt.
