Nothing new to report on things as I'm away on vacation for 10 days visiting family. My son could not get off work so he's home taking care of the tank, but I'm still nervous about things happening. :worried:

On the flip side it's nice to be out of the 100+ degree heat for a change. It's been a cool 70-75 here in the upper peninsula of Michigan. It's nice to be able to sit back and enjoy a few cold ones while taking in the spectacle of the Olympics, but I do miss my reef tank. I hope everyone gets some time to relax and visit friends or family this summer

anyone else got plans this summer, and what are you doing to keep yourself sane while away from the reef?

Now I wish I had installed a web cam

I am going down east to see my daughter, son in law and three grandchildren who moved there 2 months ago--longest time I haven't seen them since they lived around the corner from us for eight years. This is what I will be doing alot of besides deep sea fishing

Hope y'all are having a good time up there. I can onlydream of it being 100+ over here. I'm sure the tank will be fine. ;)

thanks Kane

 That explains why you haven't answered the phone.

I wanted to show you what Marc and I did with my canopy and lights.

Have a great vacation Pete.

Thanks Jay -I want to see what you ended up doing to the canopy
are the light reflectors mounted on top or are they recessed into it? Maybe I can swing by next week sometime.

Capn - great pictures. I can't image how it must be having your kids and grandkids far away. Where did they move to? Are they in the states or Canada, seeing all those jellyfish washed up on shore reminds me of Virginia / North Carolina area.

It's on the top with holes cut to allow the light through and stained quarter-round surrounding each light. It looks really professional and nice, Marc is fantastic at this sort of thing.

Let me know when you're back in town.

My son just informed me my large chips colony fell over. He indicated he can't get to it by himself so I'm going to be looking for some help as he needs a set of eyes on the front of the tank to help right it. I knew that coral was getting unstable as it grew more and more to one side.

My daughter is going to try and get her boyfriend to drop by but it's late and she may miss him leaving from work. I would think it would be okay for a couple days but would feel a lot better if it was at least turned up right even if it stayed on the bottom of the tank. I don't know if it will last till Sunday when I return.

Our local club meeting is Wed night and I'm only a few miles away from the meeting place, so I think I'll post a help wanted message there and see if I can get a volunteer to drop by to help out after the meeting as I think my son works till 10.

I was wide awake last night working on my tank, you should have called. Glad to hear you got it righted again. If you need anything at any hour, you have my cell and my home line. Seriously, I'm right up the street from you so it's not an inconvenience or anything.

Besides, when I go on vacation I won't hesitate to bother you Pete.

Pete, what are you using to peg corals? By any chance are you a golfer? I saw a neat idea on Lukinrats thread of using tees.

i was in the sanfrancisco bay area. thats where i lived before i moved to Texas. i got married up in south lake tahoe.

capn, that pictue of the jellies washed up on shore is pretty cool. i used to find jellies like that on shore on the pacific coastline from monterey to marin county ca. that also reminds of the gulf of mexico here in Texas. when i was at the gulf a couple of months ago there were TONS of jellies! ive never seen that many before!

so are you stil out of town pete?

haha - I love golf but don't play enough to consider myself a golfer

I tell people I keep score two ways

1) if I go in with 6 balls and leave with 6 - that's par
2) cost per stroke :)

I peg using 3/8" rigid airline tubing. I bought some corals mounted on plastic pegs but hate the colors (not natural) I would think the wood pegs would be a bad thing over time.

I will take a piece of rock and drill holes in it for the rigid tubing. I will usually make 2-4 holes in different places depending on the rock size. Then I'll glue the coral frag to the rock, find a good place to mount it and add the tubing to get the best orientation. I also pulled most of my live rock and drilled a bunch (over a hundred ) holes in it to mount the corals.

small world - I went to middle and high school in San Francisco, then moved to Mission Viejo (Orange County) my senior year where I set up my fist slat tanks. I have a sister that lives in Alameda.

Right now I'm in the upper peninsula of Michigan (above Green Bay WI) visiting family. My Mom and Dad moved here about 25 years ago. I also have a brother and sister and their families in the area so we try to get together here yearly but this is the first time in a long time all of my brothers and sisters made it. I'll have to go on a diet and exercise a bunch when I get back as I must have put on 20 lbs from all the big meals, beer and wine.

all of my wifes family is in sanfrancisco. she went to school there herself for a little while. not sure where exactly though? i grew up just north of there in marin county, but the last 2 years i lived in california before i came to texas i was in fairfield and vacaville. i have a friend who works for the Alemeda county sheriff. poor guy has one of the most dangerous jobs in california  where in alemeda is your sister? hopefully in the hills away from everybody!

thats nice you were able to get together with the whole family. i wasnt able to get my whole family together at the wedding which kinda sucks because i never get to see them all together anymore. naturally they all get together during christmas and thanksgiving, but i live half way across the country now. :P

speaking of frag plugs, i cant stand the ones i have! i got some zoas from a fellow club member here and they came on ceramic plugs in the shape of a cylindrical "T" . the same guy showed me a way of getting my frags to attach to rock rubble though. i prefer the rock rubble for the natural appearance. am actually expectine to load up on about 15 various frags here in the next 2 weeks so ill be busy trying to get frags to attach to rock rubble. then comes the tedious proccess of gluing all the rocks. i would totally hi-jack your idea of using the rigid airline tubing for pegging frags, but im not even gonna try to drill the tonga branch anymore! not only was that stuff hecka hard to drill through, but i broke 1 out of every 3 pieces i was trying to drill. i dont want to take the risk of breaking my finished rock structure :D

enjoy the family, eats and drinks!
