thanks - I guess, but your right, compared to the new set up I did have a pretty sorry light set up

I plan on doing some work on the underside of the tank tommorow. I'll grab some pictures of my progress. My main goals this weekend include; a water change, get a start on my electrical cleanup, fans, new SQWD, and I need to get several corals repositioned in the tank.

Sorry didn't mean it in a bad at all. Your tanks looked good back then but with the new lights, it looks even better.

Is the new SCWD threaded or slip fitting? I can't really tell.

The new SQWD is 1" threaded. For the 2 outlets, I used schedule 180 threaded both ends pipe that I cut to fit and glued into the I" socket Unions.

My previous install was 3/4" tubing, so I removed the old barb fittings and threaded in the new install to the old threded pipe fitting.

Thanks for asking.

So it is 1" internal threads. What about external? What would glue onto those 'arms'?

yes it is 1" female (or internal), I'll test fit some stuff on the outside or at least get a good measurment to see if a 1 1/4" will fit it. The documentation only talks about using a male threaded pipe fitting or barb for hooking it up, so I doubt they made the outside fit anything of a standard dimension.

I was doing my normal weekend morning pre-lights check of sps and stuff and noiced this little guy on top of my macro algea in the fuge. I know I got hundreds if not thousands of the little guys (and a couple variations of them), and decided to take a picture.

what is that, a brittle star?

Yes it is - sorry I should have mentioned that. They are quite the beneficial little detrevoir

Did you ever have one of those days where you just want to throw in the towel?
Well today was one of them for me. The new SQWD I just installed does not appear to be working and one of the existing bulkhead connections is leaking. I suppose I moved it around just enough to break the seal, and the only real fix is to probably drain the tank. For now I think I’ll just let it drip and build in a little funnel to route the water to my sump. The leak is not huge, but aggravating, none the less.

I ended up spending the day tearing apart my sump. I vacuumed out the detritus and cut down my bubble trap by about an inch and a half. I did this to get more surge volume in the sump as it was filling up to the brim and if the auto top off happened to over fill some I would get a mess to clean up. In the long run it’s a good thing I got it done, but was a real hassle doing it. I hoping the extra capacity will allow me to add a remote frag tank that drains to the main sump.

While I had everything out of he sump I decided to clean the reactors, the skimmer, the sump cover and some egg-crate I use as a screen in the fuge area. It was one of those tasks that take way too much time, with little visible return. I also cleaned up dust and salt creep. I guess on the positive side I pulled out most of my electrical and hope to get started on my electrical cleanup redo later this week

to make things better I listened to a couple recordings of my daughter, that always makes me happier . She is a vocal performance major at the University of North Texas, she is currently in the Czech republic with the school as a featured soloist doing some 10 or so performances out there.

Pete, I totally relate to your above comments. The maintenance end of this hobby is rarely as sexy as the corals displayed above, but our efforts usually benefit the livestock. Which is why I continue to clean my sump on a regular basis, mainly because it makes me feel good. A clean sump makes it easy to spot problems more quickly.

I hate it when a bulkhead leaks. With my last sump, I took some rubber to create a gutter to send the drips into the sump. When I installed the new one (in 2005), I made sure that was fixed. I don't get a drip but I get a huge amount of saltcreep in that spot. I just break off that salt on occasion (usually be accident) and toss it out.

It sounds like your daughter is living out a dream. That's awesome.

Congratulations for you and your daughter ;) She is making a life time of memories now and Daddy has to be so proud. (Yeah you said it and actually mean it for right now huh? :) )

Sorry for your trials, the frustration factor can get high when things go awry.

Thanks - and you’re absolutely right. There is nothing I would rather do then support my kids (actually young adults) by helping them take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to them.

Having a beautiful voice is such a unique and wonderful gift. There is no doubt that she is exceptional to have such an opportunity to perform over there. What kind of vocalist is she?

It's just a never ending battle with the reef. Something always goes inadvertently wrong when you work on the tank. I've had my share of problems from electrocution, to near burn down, to major spillage. It just makes you want to quit but for some extraordinary reason we keep at it. It contradicts common sense. By the way, doesn't the new SCWD unscrew from the top for cleaning purposes?

Thanks - mostly because she can, she studies and sings soprano at all of her school related stuff, but she also does a pretty good Patsy Kline.

Electrocution â€"œ been there, done that and don’t want to do it again.

SQWD - I can get the top off but not sure I can see in there the way it is installed. So breaking the unions and dropping it may be in store.

What about using a mirror to look in the SCWD?

good idea!! at least to inspect the darn thing.

Beware!!

I usually have very good sucess with killing stray mushrooms by injecting them with vinegar. This weekend I wanted to clear a rock area of some Rics and decided to do the same thing. They did not shrink up as fast, so initially I was perplexed, but they started to spill out thier guts and I thought I was rid of them. Problem was the suckers basically split like an anemone. Most of it died but there were small pieces that broke loose and drifted, some landed on sps and killed the spot they touched. good news is; the damage appears local only, or no STN/RTN.

Fortunatly I decided to just kill off a few (slow is good). I may continue to do this but folow up with a couple vacuums of the area. Or, does anyone have any other suggestions on getting rid of some rics?

LOL - you want to get rid of ricordias or mushrooms? Just put a sign on the front door of your house that says Free Ricordia and I think you'll be amazed how quickly they vanish.

You're right, people drive miles for free to $5 mushrooms, and further for Ric’s, go figure that one out.

I tried to slice or scrape a couple off and ended up totally mutilating them. The rock they are one has lots of holes making it very difficult to get clean straight cuts or to cut into the rock to remove them. Of course they like to attach themselves inside the holes, stupid ric’s.
