Nice tank

thanks

here are a few coral pictures from today (weekly update)

Servo's Mille continues to do well, it's starting to encrust and is showing some blue on the tip. His is a pink with baby blue tips - a very sweet looking coral
servomille1130.jpg

the other frag form Servo - "Servo's unknown" continues to do well. I can't capture the vibrance of it so picutes don't do it justice.
servounk1130.jpg

this green birdsnest frag is doing well - at the rate it's growing it may be as big as the mother colony before too long
smgrnbn1130.jpg

how bout some blues (blue tort that is :) )

the blob is starting to take off, I'm noticing some significant growth in the past week both in finger length and number of polyps on the fingers - maybe I'll finally start getting some idea of what the heck it is
blob21130.jpg

this blue polyp montepora digitata has always been more tan then blue, but it's coming around nicely
blumonte1130.jpg

the most interesting change this week is in the chips acro - the new growth is coming in more a lavender color then the usual green as seen from the top here
chipsnewgrowth31130.jpg

Marc's unkown continues to grow and grow - love the colors
marcunk1130.jpg

the microladus is showing off its purple polyps

the pink jade still isn't showing much pink in the polyps but I do like it

Dang your tank has pretty corals. All that LE stuff makes me jealous. Keep up the great work.

Ryan's milli in my tank is going nuts, but it is still in the angled tank where picture taking is impossible.

thank Marc

I still need to deal with teh red bugs, and I'm getting some stn on my large blue tip stag. It's only on the very lowest branch where it gets the least amount of light. I've been keeping a close look on it to make sure it doesn't spread. If it grows out much more I may be cutting a bug chunk of the coral off.

So is Ryans mille growing a bunch or what? Are you getting the nice blue and pink colors?

you need to post some kind of picture even if it's one up against your angled part of the tank with you holding it. I can't handle the suspense - arrggg

It is growing, full of colors, and lots of new tips about to burst out of it. I hate moving a happy coral, even trying to use a photo box but it just is in the worst spot for photography.

The aqua-mag is completely encrusted now.

Did you see the Granulosa? It needs me to trim it. Do you plan to be in this area any time soon? I'd really like you to see the two formosas in person.

sounds like I need to make a trip :), as I'd really like to get another frag of the granulosa. I have the perfect spot for it. I'll try to make it sometime this week, if not then maybe Saturday. I also need to pick up some black egg crate from Dave, and a trip to Franks is always an added bonus when I head that way.

anything you want on this end? make up a list and I'll let you know if it looks like it's worth fragging yet.

the Korilia has been unplugged now for about 24 hours and no GFCI issues, so I guess I'll pull it and probably scrap it for parts

I'm not sure if I'll replace it, I may just hold out for a couple Vortex or go with a design I've been kicking around for a closed loop wavebox type setup I've been contemplating. Just money right :rolleye1:

I moved my high PH Kalc off control to channel 2 and made channel 1 on all the time, for now everything seems to be working fine

feeding the goniopora

feeding the goniopora

here are a couple pictures of how I feed the goniopora

first I add some refrigerated rotofeast to some tank water to let it reach the tank temperature - just few drops
addingrotofeasttotankwater.jpg

then I put the RK2 in feed mode by pushing in the top button
puttingRK2infeedmode.jpg

and I'll turn off the other circulation pumps
turningoffotherpumps.jpg

drawing in the rotofeast into a long feeding tube (the goniopora is about 33" below the surface)
fillingfeedingtube.jpg

feeding (picture is a little washed out due to the flash)
the goniopora grabs the little rotofers and pulls them in. after about 5 minutes it opens back up and I'll repeat the process feeding all the polyps twice
feedinggoniopora1.jpg

while I was feeding the goniopora tonight I'm smelling somethign pretty darn good in the kitchen

yumm - freah home made dewberry pie
looks like I'll be feeding myself next - see there are perks to being married :)

I'm coming over for some pie! ;) j/k

Thanks for sharing the feeding pics.

I'm also glad you found the GFCI-tripping powerhead. Take a look at the Korallia magnums. Supposedly they are more wave-controller friendly and they put out as much flow as a vortech.

tomorow night I may feed the Majanos :)

I finally have some interceptor on the way, and I'm glad it is, as the red bugs are increasing in number. They seem smaller this time around but maybe they are just younger.

My bigger concern is the slow STN on the underside of the large staghorn colony. It has been steadily getting worse. Here is a picture I grabbed today - the dead area has been growing for the past month.
stagproblem.jpg

I think it's time to cut the large branch off to remove the worse of the STN. Then I'm thinking about smearing some super glue gel on the rest of the areas. I'll have to roll the beast over to get to the underside though and I'm just not looking forward to doing that. It's odd though; seeing how this coral has had basically no issues since I've had it now for 27 months, and now when parameters seem to be at there best, this seemingly super hardy coral is having an issue. I really hope it due to low light but I don't want to take the chance.

I don't know what to tell you. i see a patch of cyano under it, so it may be low flow. It could be the hosting chromis are eating off the dead tissue, or hermits are picking away at it. Have you tried a turkey baster at the spot to make sure you don't have some pests causing the damage (AEFW) ?

You did say it was heavily shaded, and my corals that are in the shade also have the same issue.

I guess and hope it's just low flow and low light. cyno is on the rise due to me not changing my RO/DI filters (bad me)

All lights were off so I turned on the 400's and took a flash picture to get closer in - I'm just not picking up any AEFW bite marks
stagdeadarea123.jpg

since the lights were off and I turned on only the 10ks, the corals all had a different color to them (with some extended PE from the lights just being out). So I had to take some more pictures :)

adding calcium hydroxide (lime) to Ka reactor

adding calcium hydroxide (lime) to Ka reactor

and this is why I like the Geo Kalk reactor :)

First off it's very easy to drain off some liquid
drainingKR.jpg

then I'll add some Lime to the liquid and mix it up using my turkey baster. I'll mix it up to a good slurry where all the lime is suspended in a slurry
mixingslurry.jpg

before the slurry gets a chance to settle - again using the turkey baster I'll put the slurry mix into the reactor - that's it (after closing the lid if course)
