"Phil's 125 Semi-Aggressive Reef"

Here we go again, I was just sitting a little dazed and was trying to figure out what do I already own that is fish safe and allow the good bacteria to colonize on. Then it hit me, why not use the bio-balls that I'm no longer using.

So here's my ? Can I use bio-balls floating loose or place in a container and keep a flow at to get the good bacteria in my QT?

Yes.

Sanding scratches out of acrylic, just when you think 1 is fully gone think again lol. If I would have done over I would have started at 600 then worked up. Instead I started at 1000. Lots of elbow grease later and the tank is starting to look great. I will post pics in a few days after I buff and polish.

Update:
Well life kinda happens and I've been working more lately so that's cut back on my free time. But with that being said I've still got to get pics and decide on a skimmer.

But I do a 10 gallon started as a QT. So far I have a heater, power head and about 20 bio balls floating at the top surface. Any other way I can reuse the bio balls more effectively in my QT?

I'm glad I started my 10 gal QT 1st, before fully setting up the DT. Even though I've read it countless times on here, I've been amazed at the rate of water evaporation something I had forgotten about, nor planned on. I loose somewhere between .5 - 1 gallon a week. Thinking once the DT up and running with 2 QTs that I'll need min. 20 gallons ready to go.
2 much? 2 little?

I let my salinity drift (due to evaportation) and do water changes with lower than normal salinity to balance things back. Not sure if that is good for the fish but I've been doing that for years and havn't seen any negative impacts.

If you haven't settled on Wrasses yet, i would like to Throw the bird wrasse out there since you wont be keeping crabs/shrimp.

Some people say they eat snails, but that hasn't been the experience i have had with them. I had a large female previously, and currently have a pair.

They are active swimmers, and very unique beautiful fish. one would be good in that size tank, but they are very active and very aggressive feeders(as in move extra fast at feeding time) so the candinalfish may not handle that sort of activity well.

Also if the eel is going to make a meal of the fish, the cardinals will be the first to go. Personally i would do a group of chromis before i did the cardinals with the rest of your list.

Nope not settled on a wrasse yet. I've looked at the bird wrasse in the book I have, are they anything like a lunare, temperament etc? Sorta trying to stay in the middle even though eels aren't what many consider middle, but the chainlink seems to be very close.

I thought about the chromis but everything I've read seems to suggest they'll whittle themselves down to 1. I'm always open because it am wrong sometimes lol.

My only concerns with the cardinals and chalk bass are the hawks really.

Any other suggestions? Still headed in the right direction? What do I need to add 1st? The time to add my 1st fish to QT is drawing near :)

Nothing like a Lunare Wrasse from my experience although i have not personally owned a Lunare. I do actually own a Blue Head Wrasse and he was moved to the 75g sump really quickly. Thalassoma Wrasses can be real aggressive. From my experience, the Bird wrasse is not aggressive at all to any other fish i have kept them with, including other wrasses. Crabs and shrimps will probably end up on he menu however.

Crabs and shrimp are ok for the menu, planning on starting up a crab feeder tank.

Another step forward today as I added a small piece of salmon to the QT.

While I know most cucs wills be on the menu, would a few crabs be a good 1st addition to my QT? Thinking ahead to the eels.

I'm still undecided on a full list.

Update:

I just got back from my LFS and had my QT water tested by them, and everything was in check. I now think it's time to add some snails and crabs.

Any objections? Starting to see a little more light which feels good.

Upon further review I've decided on the following: first fish added to the QT will be... A pair of black mollies. Why am I doing this you ask? Well at the moment I only have 1 of 2 QTs up and ready and the DT isn't there (hopefully about a month away from adding water), since they can't bring any disease into an already disease free tank that they would be great in the building of the beneficial bacteria on the other bio balls I want to use in the 20, plus another 2 groups to go into 5 gallon holding buckets. Would love to add a pair of juvenile chainlinks to the 20 gal QT around the end of May is my goal.

2 mollies in the 10 gal QT I am going to use to help seed everything else. Also major progress with the DT, today I polished the DT with Novus 2 and 3, will do the final step tomorrow, very happy with the way this has turned out, might also run by lowes and look at tubing for plumbing tomorrow.

Starting to buff out after sanding.

10 gallon QT with Fred and Wilma, 2 mollies that will be used to seed all other tanks since I will be constantly adding new bio balls as I remove.

Fred and Wilma are doing good after a week, and since adding them I've gotten into a routine of topping off the tank every other day. I'm thinking of dropping the anthias and chalk bass from my list. Hopefully going to order my rock and sand next week.

Hey Phil subscribed to your thread to keep and eye on your build. Man you must have smoked a lot of cig's to afford and aquarium.:)
