i just ordered the "Two Little Fishies Phosban Reactor 150" and was wondering what everyone else is using as far as media goes .... also it doesnt come with a pump so if any one has an old one laying around u wanna sell me that would be great ;) ... btw i kno this isnt the greatest reactor but i figured it was better than nothing and for under $50 shipped it didnt brake the wallet

I run carbon and seachem phosphate remover. I plan on changing out the seachem for Rowaphos or Dr. G's. Still not sure which one works best. If I remember correctly the two little fishes phosphan reactor was under $30.

My next order will be Phosar. I've heard great things about. Doesn't break down into powder very easily and works great. Currently using Two Part Solutions bulk GFO.

hey, if possible, i would try and tap it off your return if you can sacrifice a little flow. i run mine prob with less then 50gph through it.

less pumps, less electric! less clutter too.

Illal...The reactoor is simple and effective,...which counts. Anyhow if you want to run carbon through it you can do that from time to time. I usually add some to run for 2 weeks every 1.5 months to clear up the water.

Also if you orefer to keep phosphates on 100% check besides using chaeto and water changes consider buying rowaphos. It will not leech back into your tank as other name brands. For carbon I use
"Black diamond" that can get picked up at petsmart or petco I believe.

Carbon is one of the sources that most don't think to check for phosphates. Always rinse your carbon well with RO/DI water and then let is soak for several days with changing the water everyday.

When in doubt - test it.

Check your RO/DI water for phosphates and then test the water that your carbon has been soaking in.

An RO/DI soak does not effect the efficiency of the carbon once placed into the aquarium.

If anyone finds a carbon source that is phosphate free - please let me know what brand it is.

i was just at big al's and didnt see any "rowaphos" ... are there any stores that sell it locally? if not ill just get it online but id much rather not have to wait if u kno what i mean

Test the effluent water coming out of the reactor. When you detect PO4, it's time to change the media.

There is no set schedule to change the media because there are too many factors involved.

PO4 level of the tank water.
Amount of media used.
Type of media used.
Amount of flow through the media.
Etc, etc......

Big Als has some GFO called PuraPhoslock, It is basically a generic phosban. It works well for me, at 1/2 the price.

cause a few people recomended rowaphos here and after reading about it it just sounded like the way i wanted to go

if rowaphos isnt available local whats the next best thing that i can pick up around here? oh and also if i decide to order rowaphos online how much will i need to order?

As far as quantity, IME order as much as you can afford. You usually get it cheaper with the bigger quantities, so if you are planning on running it 24/7 in the long run you will save money.

That being said, I normally run about 75% of the suggest amount of GFO. Which ends up being around 3 Table spoons for 100 gallons. I end up changing mine out every 2 weeks, but then I do not get a big ALK drop, like I did when I ran 150%.

I've just been running a whole can of phosban at a time. I don't have the time or patience to measure that stuff out :p

Just make sure to rinse it thoroughly before you use it regardless of what you use.
