phosphate question

I will be moving soon and breaking down a tank is a pain in the butt. I have used the back yard hose for years to top off and now I am dealing with it. Since I am moveing I am up grading my tank to a 200+ gallon aquarium. The question is.... If I dry out the sand and rock will the phosphates go away? Oh also you should know that I now have an RODI from BRS. No more back yard hose and I will also be setting up an auto top off.

Drying the rock and sand will not remove phosphates. Lanthanum Chloride, will; http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1474839&goto=newpost

Wow, I got about 1/10th of the way through that thread (5 of 53 total pages) and realize I need to spend some serious time reading it...

Has anyone out here tried using lanthium chloride dripped into theri tanks at intervals to reduce phosphate?

Not to get off topic of the question (which is recycling rocks that are leaching phosphate) but this sounds like a significantly less expensive method than GFO...

Just wondering if anyone out this way has tried it...

I have some Lanthanum and used it when starting my new tank. Used it once a week to remove leaching phosphates from some try rock.. It seemed to work for that purpose. I did a lot of water changes as its still in the tank, just in a different form. Dont know I would use it long term.

There is a load of good info in that thread. There are a few other threads here on the subject, but I think the one I linked is the best of them.
