photosynthesis question?

Let say one of your coral that needs light starts to grow under a ledge. Like an branch or two....

Do you need to move the coral so it all gets light? Or will the lighted branches use the light to transfer the photosynthesis to the shaded branches? Just curious.

Assuming the light under the ledge isn't enough for the coral to use, the tissue on those branches will begin to die back and eventually the branch will be dead. Easiest thing is to just frag (cut) those branches and either relocate them or turn them in for credit at your LFS.

As corals grow, they'll end up shading themselves too. Lower branches will die off as the new growth shades them, unless you prune the new growth to allow light to penetrate.

+1 eventually you will tire of always clipping corals that start to grow into the shade

Sorry for the double post, but I was looking at my tank last night and saw the most astonishing thing. My xenias (photosynthetic) are growing down in the back of one of my caves where a very small amount of light can get to them. They are volunteers back there, I can't even reach to clean back where they are. So like I said before, they'll get where they need to be lol
