Phyto culture

For what its worth, I've been culturong phyto for a while now. I mix regular, cheap IO salt in to water up to like 1.19. Heat It in the microwave for 8 min. let it cool, add inoculation faf, dt's, whatever. Add f2 from faf light 16 dark for 8. The only crashes so far have been from laziness. You don't want the calcium level to be to high, hence the regular IO salt.8 min in the microwave kills everything. I wait 10 or 15 days to harvest, put it in the fridge. It amazes me how long that stuff stays alive. I open the cap and swirl it around every so often and so far so good. I read all this in the plankton culture manual from faf. Well worth the money. Works for me. Sorry if I jumped in and am not supposed to, I'm quite new to reefcentral forums. I did some research and seems nannochloropsis had best overall attributes as far as algae goes. Just my 2. Happy new year, happy reefing.

I highly beg to differ. The only thing it is great for is rotifers. Copepods don't like it and it's HUFA profile is lacking. Sure is easy to grow and get volumes of though.

It's been a while since I opened the book, maybe I should have done so before I started typing. For what its worth I've bred plenty of copepods with nanno alone. Will do some reading and post some more tonight, I am by no means an expert. Sorry if I provided any mis-information. I will look into it.
