Phytoplankton

Can I start culturing phytoplankton using a bottle of phytofeast to start the culture process? If so how would you do it.

I believe the standard Phytofeast has some preservatives added, and I'm sure that it is not as fresh as "Phytofeast Live." If you have access to Phytofeast Live, I would choose that over the standard Phytofeast. Even better IMO though, would be to start out using the DT cultures.

Simply add it to your saltwater in a clear container (soda bottle with lables removed.) Add some fertilizer (Miraclegrow), an air stone, and put it under good lighting for 12 hrs per day. Do a YouTube search, and you'll see some examples with further details.

It can be done with the phytofeast live. While it's a mix of phyto's, typically it is the Nano that establishes when you use it to start a culture. Here is a good thread on culturing from the breeding forum that can help you with the culturing. For fertilizer, get the proper modified Guillards media. It's available from Florida Aqua Farms for cheap enough that it makes no sense to use garden fertilizer that doesn't have the necessary elements and vitamins to yield a good nutritional phyto.

used to have a guy here in brevard that was growing it but he stopped ..i have been looking for a new place and getting some ... its great for clams ..

Well I got started putting it all together

If you are getting the micro algae grow from Florida aqua farms, you might as well get a phyto starter culture disk. Much easier than trying to get one started from phyto feast

Are you going to culture in the 10 gallon aquarium? If you are you should reconsider using Erlenmyer flasks or 2 liter bottles. Much easier and you have redundant cultures going in case one crashes, plus cleaning and sterilizing the culture container is much easier than cleaning an aquarium

Just my opinion.

The 10gal is for copepods. If you look at shelf above its has a 4 station rack for 4 2 liter bottles :) Besides the culture disk and algea grow anything else i would need and is 1 disk enough?

I thought that Is what that was but the aquarium threw me off. Odd since my setup is similar, too shelf phyto, second shelf aquarium with adult brine shrimp, bottom shelf copepods lol

If you are placing an order with FAF, the micro algea grow and disk should be all you need. They do sell starter kits that come with rigid airline and stuff but it's. It really necessary. You can get an extra disk and keep in the fridge for 6 months in case of a crash, but one should. E enough

Just start one culture, when you split it, start the second, when they split you can start the third and forth

If you are in a hurry you can start multiple 2 liter cultures from more than one disk
