Pick my next Skimmer

I am planning out a 180-225 gallon tank. I prefer external skimmers. Would like one that is on the quiet side. My budget is $800. I don't want a skimmer I have to mod. What do you guys/gals recommend?

If you can go in sump, the ATi Bubblemasters are really nice. The BM250 $769 is a good fit for your setup. Another great skimmer is the H&S A200-1260 for $1,099, little more than your budget.

Thanks for the recommendations.
Percula: I have a euroreef on one tank I have now and have always loved it. They are very well built.

klam114: I had considered the ATI. Some of the readings I did on it scared me though. Is it that hard to tune in? Does it have overflow issues? I am still considering that H&S even for the extra cash.

kodyboy: Wow that does look nice. it reminds me of a smaller Deltec skimmer I have right now. I know nothing about that company..

koraltek: I guess I will have to give the ATI thread another read.
Are the horror stories true about customer service and shipping issues with the DAS skimmer maker? Do you think that Euroreef would handle a well stocked 180-215 gallon tank? The reason I like external is it allows more sump area for a fuge and what not. I can build a small stand next to the tank for the skimmer.

Is ATI making an external skimmer?

titansfan,
protein-skimmer.com is Orca, great company, great service, but you may have to wait a little while as he is really busy with making lots of skimmers. A great recommendation, but you still may have to wait:)
Orca makes great units.
No ATI external that I have heard of.
DAS skimmers can also be purchased through protein-skimmer.com (Orca), I would try them first as petoramma has bad reviews.
I do not think the euroreef rc180 is even in the league of the other skimmers mentioned.

Have you even used an RC180, or an orca for that matter? Or are you recommending soley on your professional opinion?

I have used a variety of euroreef skimmers rs and rc. I have also seen Orcas on friends tanks and at an LFS, but I do not own one. The ones that I have seen are very well built and were producing nice amounts of skimmate.

And for what its worth, and from experience I'd say the RC180 could handle the job, but you'd be better off going with the RC250 or A200 if you want external and quiet. I'll take 1 eheim over two AB's anyday. They are quieter, and don't have as many problems down the road. The aquabee pumps pumps work well, and draw in a little more air, but they have a flap on the inside of pump that tends to get stuck after a year or two. It requires much more maintenance than an eheim. Do a search in the deltec forum and you'll see what I'm talking about.

And yes, I have used both pumps on a skimmer, so I speak from experience.

Kodydoy,I don't think you have used any kind of Euroreef.I think its the other way around with the skimmers you posted arnt in the same league as the Euro skimmers,i think you need to tack a look at the Euroreef web and see all the tanks that are runing Euroreef.Peaple need to stop hating on Euroreef.

But my question was, have you used an RC180 or an orca on one of your tanks?

By RC180 I mean a ER skimmer, built with an EHEIM pump? Not a sedra.

Edit: If so, I'd love to see some pics of your results. I often see you recommending (on just about every thread for that matter) what skimmer people should use. What skimmer do you use now, and can I see your tank? The reason I ask, is that the proof is often in the pudding :)

orange,
yes I have lied I have "never" used a euroreef skimmer.......come on why would I bother? Do I get royalties or something from other companies?
For $800 an rc180 is simply not in the same league as the other units mentioned, it is that simple. Reeflo orcas, BM250s, Orca RC skimmers with three pumps, a 12 inch diameter and over 30 inches in height......please if you think a euroreef rc180 (24 inch height, 8 inch body, 960lph air draw) is anywhere near as good as the above you are simply a fanboy with no common sense.
I am not saying euroreefs are bad skimmers (never did anywhere), but for the price there are much better options which will solidly out perform the ER.

yes I have used eheim equiped ER RC skimmers before (not a 180 though, I think it was a 250) they work well, but are very expensive for what they are. I have never personally owned an Orca.

So you botherd to take pictures of your $200 ASM, but when you purchased you $1000 ER, you didn't bother?

Sorry, I'm calling BS.

I'm done here.

jimdogg, you are a dolt. I took those pictures of the $80 odyssea ps160 next to the asm, simply because the ASM was in the same sump because people on here wanted to see it in action. I did the same thing with the typhoon for the very same reason. I do not take pictures of my equipment to "show off", I don't see the point. I have many tanks, I maintain a bunch at the school I work at and I get new equipment in all the time and sell some to help pay for the cost of the aquarium and supplies at the school. I currently have an aerofoamer becket, a tunze 9010, a typhoon, a ps160 and an aquaeuro classic 400, not to mention a bunch of old DLS units, some airstone skimmers and a few others I can not remember. I have had many euroreefs, old and new, with sedras and with eheims. They were fine, but too expensive for what they were. I have had donations of those skimmers more than once! Someone even gave me a deltec once, but I sold it to help pay for the aquariums.
I also have lots of other equipment, some good some bad, but I go through tons of stuff. Before you say something it is better to have a clue as to what you are talking about.

again please tell me how the RC180 euroreef is in the same league as a sequence reeflo dart, a bm250 or a three pump orca. Please show me how it would pull anywhere near as much air or produce anywhere near as much skimmate?
