Pickling lime

Hey all! My local grocery store has 4-1 lb bags of pickling lime. If anyone is looking for some inexpensive Kalk, let me know. It is around $2.50/lb. I think that is about 1/3 the price of kalk mix at the pet store.

If anyone around here wants it, please let me know and I can get it for you.

BTW...I have been using it with no ill effects from what I can tell. I have seen excellent corallin growth while using it.

which Anderson's? all the locations or just one in particular? I know of the one near dussel drive, that's the only location nearby that I know how to get to.

I'd think that they'd all carry it.

There is also one on Talmadge, near Franklin Park mall and one in the Woodville mall.

I am not sure it is the right season to buy it though. I am not sure stores carry it year round. They usually only carry it in the canning season around here.

It is good to Hear about North Baltimore and not hear of a major crime or the town sinking back into the swamp from which it came

Pickling lime is a step in the right direction

Forgive me for being ignorant, but are you using this as a caclium supplement?? What is the mix actually made of?? I need a recipe!!:)

no recipe, it's food grade calcium hydroxide, or kalk mixture if you buy it at a fish store and not a grocery store.

if you can find a way to produce this stuff that is cheaper than just buying pickling lime let me know, it's pretty darn cheap that way to begin with, about $4 for a pound, which for my tank would probably be at least 6 months worth, if not way more.

Yeah, I am not sure you could make it at home.

I have been running both my 75 and my 29 on pickling lime. I use it for all my makeup water in the 75. One pound will last me about 3-4 months, but I am only mixing about 1/2 tsp. per gallon of fresh water in my top-off water container. That is about half the dosage most others are using. I have had excellent coralline growth.

I use 3 tsp. of calcium hydroxide to 5 gallons of water, even after letting it sit 24 hours before it goes into the NURCE, I still get a decent amount of settle out in the refiller, but it has never been a problem and since I started using the NURCE and refilling with all kalk water, instead of just a kalk drip, coral growth has exploded

I also went to Andersons to get it, its really cheap there. I have seen an increase in coralline using it. I use 2 tsp per gallon and drip it into the sump at night.

actually I found that the NURCE did not work well on my 20 at all, now that I have almost 75 gallons total volume it does real well. see it keeps going a little while after filling to even the pressure in the system. In a small tank like a 20 gallon you would have to make the kalk water VERY weak or it will be too much and drastically raise the pH

picked up 4 pounds of mrs. wages at Andersons today, $1.50 a pound, you can't beat that, considering that Gary's sells 7.9 oz. containers for $12.50
