Pics of dendros, balano, and duncan!

wow i really like the dendros. how hard are they to take care of? what kind of lighting do they need? how many variations of dendros are there? i have a 29 gal.

They're not photosynthetic and IME impartial to lighting. I feed my dendros every day if I can remember.
Right now I've got 3 different types of dendros, and hopefully getting another one or two later this month.

Hey folks I had some question for you. First question is regarding my Dendro coccinea, I've had it for about two weeks now and I noticed that its not opening up like it did from when I bought it at the store. I've feed it every night. I do notice that it opens up a lot durring the night but most of the time ist closed or just a little opened. Do they like alot of flow or are they more of a low flow coral? The second one is a Balano, this one still opens but not as much since the pollyps are being push around alot. Does it seem that iam giving them to much flow? I will post some picture in a bit.

My first dendro :) any ideas of what type is this one?

I only have it for 3 days so far, it opens only when the lights go out, today I was able to feed it some shrimp, I turned off the lights for about 10 minutes and opened up, I fed it, and turned the actinics on after eating it just closed back up

Mchava, which is the dendro and which is the balano in the pic? The two polyps in the front are pretty much dead already.

I just didn't have the heart to say it,, :( :sad2:

balano is in the back dendro in the front. It acutaly still opens just like a normal dendro but for some reason it always does that. I need to take some pictures when its opened. Unless I fed it to much last night and its not liking it. Let me see if I can get it to feed again.

You can try squeezing some fresh squid over them to get the scent. My dendros love squid.
Where did you get the balano from?

Mchava, it might bounce back, just reduce flow and entice with feedings. They like a little flow but only when healthy, less flow and they extend polyps more IME.

cristhiam, looks like a Dendrophyllia Arbuseula to me

Viper, any more luck with the pinky? post a pic ;)

Hey Harry, the little guy is making a very quick comeback! I got him to eat last night and now he's fully open. Here's a quick pic I just took with flash. Cam batteries ran out right afterwards.

I also got the dendro from him.

Hceiv thanks. I will start target feeding it and move it to another location where it gets less flow.

Viper, your skills are better than mine, great job!

No worries Mchava, it'll be fine if it's still eating, just wants less flow I think, best of luck!

well here are some more let me know if its to much flow. I did take the dendro out so that I can feed it better.

Balano at night

dendro feeding. you can still see the mouth opening and taking in the food. Then it will puff up and stay that way for a while. Once the lights turn on it will slowly begin to close again.

Haha thanks Harry.

I could be wrong, but the balano looks like a dendro to me. On Hugo's site he has it listed as a dendro too.
The dendro looks in pretty bad shape, but they're hardy. Good luck with it.

You might also want to move it under a rock or ledge to reduce flow and light. Although they are impartial to light, sometimes too much light can be stressful.

Here's some pics from my various dendros, balanos and duncans over the past year...

The balanophyllia I have is an encrusting coral with very small polyps. The polyps don't get bigger than a dime fully expanded.

Harry how long ago did you get that giant balano from Mike? I better get one. :D
