Pics of my weird plumbing

Are you going to use a loc line or anything coming out of the bulkhead? A mag9 takes a .75" hose right? You could get a 6" piece of locline with a 1x.75 reducer bushing and just slightly arch it upwards so it breaks the imaginary line of the bottom of the teeth in your overflow..

If that isn't feasible just make sure your sump can handle the extra volume of water it is going to take to break the siphon...

SOme people will cut in a check valve on teh return but they are not foolproof.. I would rather not risk a mechanical failure and flood my living room...

Yeah loc line was in my original plan to prevent the back siphon. But the adaptor I needed to fit the .75" loc line in my 1" bulkhead didn't come in at the LFS I ordered it at so I took a different approach.

It's not too late to go that way tho. Might be a good idea to be sure and prevent flooding, because the loc line will buy me another .5-.75 inches of water being drained to my sump.

Thanks for your help. Gonna finish filling my tank right now.

Those reducer bushings can be had at any hardware store.. Osh, Home Depot and ace should all carry them.. If the bh is threaded on the inside you will need a 1"x.75" ips reducing bushing.. IF it isn't threaded then you will need a 1" slip bushing x .75" fip....

Good Luck with your leak test.. That Octo looks like its whipping up a storm....

Yeah the loc line is threaded so I'll have to do a hardware hunt for that tomorrow. The skimmer is in deed putting in work. It's been running for 5-6 days in a bit a saltwater I dumped in there after a water change. No skimmate yet, but I didn't anticipate any. I'll keep ya updated on how it goes. *crosses fingers*

Good and bad news, filled the tank with fresh water. No leaks.

The mag 9 is way too strong and was putting water back in to the tank faster than the overflow could drain it. Good thing I opened up the Y drain which leads back to the skimmer section and it has a good balance now.

Bad news is the overflow is the loudest thing I've ever heard. I'm pretty use to noise as well and noise doesn't normally bother me, but this is LOUD. Not sure if adding salt making the water denser will slow things down a bit and kill the noise a bit, or once things slimer over and break in. Not sure, just typing out of my ***. Might have to find a way to fit a durso in my over flow to kill some of the noise cuz man it is loud. Like a constant toilet flush...

Any suggestions?

it's a built in corner overflow. 5.5"x 5.5"x 16" tall. 1 inch bulkhead. I should went 1.5". Oh well. Still need me to post a pic? I'll see if I can get a decent one tonight.

You shouldn't have problem sticking a durso stand pipe in there. Put one in there and the noise problem should go away.

IS it plexi or glass? You could redrill for a 1.5"... A durso w uold also help..

I had a feeling it wuold be really close with a mag 9... Is the hole for the 1" bh offset at all? You could build a durso out of a Tee, cap and a street 90... I've had luck also taking a 12-15" piece of 1" pvc and drilling the crap out of it or cutting slots into it .. The only bad thing with the modified durso is if it backs up you'll be in trouble...

The tank is plexi. Drilling a bigger hole is just about out of the question at this stage. Here are some pics of the overflow.

Yeah I've seen a PVC pipe with a "T" at the top. Not sure about the 90 attachment. What do you mean about the modified durso being backed up? As in clogged?

try putting a 8" piece of pvc into the bh fitting. Then put a t on top of that then another short 4" piece of pvc you can cap this for the time being.. YOu will want to start with an .125" hold in here also then adjust accordingly.... Out of the branch of the T put your street 90 and face it at a 45 degree angle downwards.. See if that helps with the noise at all.. If it doesn't go with a durso.. There were quite a few articles about it when I searched google last time.. Relatively easy to build.. Just a few hand tools and a drill.... If there isn't enough room you can get some 45's and offset back into a corner of the overflow box..

Thanks again guys for all your help. I took notes on building a durso and will have to build that tomorrow. As for now I had to turn everything off. As noise INsensitive as I am, that was just killing me.....

Keep in mind that your durso with new PVC piping may be slightly noisier than you would like at first. These things do "break in" as the PVC gets coated with organic slime after a while, and will quiet down further and have fewer microbubbles at the outlet.

UPDATE!

Durso installed. Nice and quiet now. 1 million times better. I went to home depot and luckily found all the pieces I needed and pieced it together for less than 8 bucks. Instead of using the cap on the top and drilling holes, I put a small ball valve so I can just adjust the size of the air hole needed.

I kind of freaked out when I noticed water leaking from the bottom of my bulkhead after I put the durso in. I thought I might've cracked it or something, but after taking the durso out, the bulkhead seemed to have loosened a bit, so I retightened it and it seems fine now. Might need to find some really wide flat pliers to give it a real nice tight seal but there isn't much room in there so it's kind of hard.

I added my salt and turned my heater on. I've been running it like that with durso for 3 hours or so now. Keeping a close eye on things since I'm paranoid as sh** when it comes to flooding my floors and my downstairs neighbors.

I think I'll do the canopy fan and add some liverock tomorrow. I'll work on stabilizing temperature tomorrow.

Once again thanks everyone that helped me out on this one.

Be careful if you use pliers to tighten it. You can crack the glass if you make it too tight. On my tank I just tightened it as tight as I could with my hands.

Right on.. Glad to see it coming together.. Keep us updated with some pics.... Most bulkheads I do handtight with another quarter turn with pliers.. If it leaks I'll give it just a nudge and check then repeat the process if it still leaks.. YOu don't want to go balls tight the first time, there will be no where to go if it leaks...

Yeah I hand tightened the bulkhead as much as I could. The leak has seemed to stop.

Now my new problem. I don't have anything in the tank except a powerhead and some sand. Don't even have my lights on and my temperature is 80.7. I guess I saw this one coming. Damn 11th floor apartments =/

Anyone recommend a CHEAP chiller. Or is the solution a clip on fan blowing down on the water in the sump? Still have to spend money on LR and going broke fast!

How long do chillers last anyway? I talked to a guy selling one that was 6 years old.
