when I touched the therm last night, my hands were covered in soot and the fire smell from the therm is still very much present.

those are made by marineland correct?
i had two of those, BOTH went past the indicated temp settings and hit 90s, with the orange indicator light still on. trashed them and switched to the stealths.

Luckily nobody got hurt!!! Did you have it attach to your sump by the suction cups? Or was it on the bottom of your sump?

Those heaters suck. I had one explode on me. I almost crapped my pants, cuz it was late at night, I was surfing reef central, like always, I heard a pop and a flash of light, then all of a sudden I see a grip of water on the floor. Luckily I was up and the GFI tripped. What sucked the most was I had just put in a bamboo floor and it ruined part of my floor.

This is wierd as I am having heater problems as well. Mine WON'T turn off. I have lowered the termostat and nothing. I have gotten a new one I am going to switch tonight.

Or get a high quality titanium heater like a Finnex. They are not much more expensive, have better control and won't ever shatter. And a separate temp controller is an excellent safety check.

I've had too many "budget" glass heaters fail on me to every consider using one every again for anything but heating saltwater before mixing. Those budget heaters are considered disposable by the manufacturers

The only possible exception, IMO, is an Ebo Jager -- but don't run them submerged; run them at the water line. The thermostats stink on them, but I haven't had one shatter yet that was run at the water line.

thanks Nicole. The fiance requires me to purchase all electrical equip new and top or near top of the line. (even though the therm was purchased new)

I will be purchasing a finnex

Those kind suck. I had one on my tank and the temp regulator doesnt work. Even with it on "low" it put my tank in the 90's and killed everything.

(coughs) a $2000+ skimmer is just on in the fish buffet for me yet.
I could buy it, but then I would get a speech about my priorities being in order.

When I used a heater, I used a titanium one. But my ebo jaeger controller broke, so I just took it out...

Tank never drops below 78

Oops I have the same heater over 3 years and did not had too much problem I always found it very hard to adjust due to the stupid knob but it did not fail so far. I will keep an eye and buy a controller.

Thanks for the heads up.

My marineland heater also blew up on me in my nano setup a few years ago. It blew glass shards all over my tank. Learned my lesson.
