I don't think that since they shoal in the wild, that you need a shoal to spawn them in captivity.

If hey are social spawners, how many would you think it takes for two to break out of the pack and spawn?
I have seen this behavior and never saw it in small groups.
I have also seen it in passer angels...the proverbial twin of the clarion.
They too breed in mobs.
But...maybe in captivity they would still dance given less then ideal situations ?

There are still only two fish spawning together.... I bet if you had a male and a female they would spawn if given enough room to rise, and the right lighting schedule and if the summer temps were simulated.

Not quite true.... many fish are extreme attractice to collectors due to their rarity (in the hoby), not just their looks...

By attractive I meant the fish's physical appearance. It has nothing to do with price, in large part because different people find different fish attractive. For example, I don't find Clarions particularly pretty to look at, but fish like Wrought Iron's and Gem tangs are stunning to me (I guess I'm a sucker for shades of black/grey/white ).

Collecting fish that are rare/hard to get is more or less motivated by the same reasons and ideas as collecting anything rare/hard to get (watches, cars, jewelery, art, etc).

Correct. There must be some reason these fish stick together in the wild. Holacanthus passer, H. clarionensis, H. limbaughi all do it. Not many other angels do... And they all live where not many other angels do... which might have something to do with it, where they live.

I also think it would be interesting to see if you find the tight groups like you do in the wild in a big tank without predators. Is it one of those instances where the fish shoal in the wild but not in captivity. I don't know.

But I would bet you could spawn two fish.

Sometimes you run into a school so big that it boggles the mind.
I have seen passer gangs up to 300 fish in 20 feet of water.
Upon dropping a biologist from Mexico city directly into it she squeeled thru her snorkle.
After that ,the over cautious attitude based on some mythical fragility of the species' resiliance disappeared.

May...the season for smalls is in April/May/
The huge hurricane in Baja a few months ago killed a lot of juvenile fish. It drives them deeper where the coral protection is low and they then suffer heavily from predation.
Snappers and basses have a field day when the storms drive the reef fishes deeper.
In low hurricane summers we get a bumper crop. This year was not one of those as the one huge hurricane was a monster.
Babies are being made as we speak and many will be 2 inches in May.

It'll be news here probably.
We are wholesale only.
However my associates believe that we should explore the opening of a retail storefront.
So many stores go direct to our supply lines. It seems only fair that a wholesaler might think about playing more fields as well.
What I like most about wholesale is the weekends off and not taking an hour to explain disease control to a guy who got his fish at a big chain store....
What I like least about wholesale is that almost all our customers are buy and sell business people and not fish fanatics!
Sustainable collection practices, fish behavior, adventures in collecting etc are pretty much all lost on the traditional customer base.

All I ever hear is....'How much? Whats my discount? Whats my deal? What if I buy 2/ etc."

The fish talk and exploration ...the interest in marinelife all seems to be in the hobby zone. Business people are having a rough year and there seems to be no fun in it anymore.

Most of this stuff is 75% politics and bureacracy and the actual adventure is kinda the afterthought.
