Picture taking help

I am trying to hone my picture taking skills. I am using a Toshiba 4.0 MP point & shoot. This has most of the standard options like macro, white balances, shutter speed, etc. Is there a genral setup used for a starting point to take pictures through the tank? Then adjust from there. Any help on this would be great. I would like to be able to get some decent shoots with this camera then once I hone my skills, talk the Boss (fiance) into maybe an SLR. TIA

This is my response from a recent [similar] question:
For close-ups you generally need to use small apertures [big f-numbers] to get decent depth of field, and for fish pictures you need fast shutter speeds. Here's the gist of it: the smaller your aperture the slower your shutter speed, and conversely, the faster your shutter speed the bigger your aperture. As the aperture increases in size [to allow more light thru, which allows faster shutter speeds] the depth of field decreases.
This article explains how the camera/lens/light meter work together. Photography is all about compromising between depth of field and shutter speed

Here's another article that will help you learn how to take good pics. Once you learn the basics (how the aperture affects depth of field and shutter speed) practice is what will help the most.
