Can you guys share a picture of your sps tank where you are currently dosing calcium and alk and not using a calcium reactor?

Im debating whether I should buy a calcium reactor or not. Im using bionic and dosing 120 ml of each component a day. I dont really mind dosing it everyday, but Im wondering if I will get better results in my sps if I had a calcium reactor instead? For testing, my parameters are pretty stable. Please advise and share. Thanks

Mike: I recently was debating whether to buy a Ca reactor or not. Decided not too, at least for right now.

I am currently dosing Randy's DIY 2 part Ca and Alk supps manually (those and kalk as well). Cost-wise, this has been very efficient. Bought the dowflake for Ca online & baking soda for Alk at the grocery. I'm going to get a litermeter to automate the dosing. That will be an expense (probably equal to a Ca reactor setup), but I am thinking once set up, it will be very easy to maintain (as would a Ca reactor).

hth,
rob

here's my 90g, which is approx 4 months old:

kirsten what time of day do you dose???do you pour it into the main tank or the sump?

:eek1:very nice

I mix the washing soda part in my auto top off and that keeps the ALK steady 24/7. The CA I dose at night. Easy.

Thanks.

For a 100g tank with a mod-heavy coral load, a 2-part will be much more expensive in the long run, then there's the manuel drudgery of having to add it every day, so I'd suggest investing in a dosing pump, like a LM3 (mine was $600). It would be much cheaper and less time consuming to just get a calcium reactor

You won't get better results because they are adding the same thing as long as your adding the two part in equal portions. But you can get a dosing pump from http://www.reefdosingpump.com/ for less than $200 and switch to Randy's two part.

For those using Randy's Two Part.

Can you say what you are using (I'm using Dow Flake & Arm & Hammer Baking Soda) and how much do you dose per day or week.

CA - Dow Flake (Still up in the air as to how much. Looks like around 70 ounces per week. Dosing 1/2 twice per week. CA is at 420ppm.

Alk - I mix the one gallon as per the recipe - then pour it into a 10 gallon container with RO Water. Dosing pump set on 40ml/hour keeps my alk at 7.8 DKH.

the problem i have had with the 2 part is the alk part not mixing well.. I use recipe 1 and always have undisolved baking soda no matter how hard I shake that thang!

Just boil the water first and dump the baking soda in while its boiling. But be careful with silverware because it will take tarnish off them. I just use the same pot and a big plastic spoon.

I do about 40ml a day for both but my corals haven't grown in yet. It was more when I had a sandbed. I base my dosing on my alk consumption.

Hef: I also use dowflake & baking soda (baked). My target numbers are Ca=425ppm, Alk=9dKH. This is how much I'm dosing (both recipe #1):

90g (in addition to kalkwasser drip):
Ca: 140ml/day
Alk: 114ml/day

45g (with very rare kalkwasser drip):
Ca: 72ml/day
Alk: 42ml/day
