Pike or Monroe County Reefers?

I've long had the suspicion that I have the only reef tanks in all of Pike County, but is there anyone out there from Monroe County?

OK,OK, so there's a couple in Monroe, but it looks like me and Critter are the Lone Reefers of Pike and Wayne counties. Do any of you remember Tropical Marine Paradise in Stroudsburg?

I bought my 90 from Ed and Cindy. It is still running today. Back then I was buying all tropical fish. I sure do miss that place. They were the best.

Did you know that Ed and Cindy manufacture Sea Swirls?

Greg

Yeah, that place was a real lesson in making the maximum use of the space available. Remember the "tanks in the sky" in the back room? I've never seen tanks racked that high anyplace else. I forget their names, but after Ed and Cindy sold the place, the new owners sold all those acrylic tanks. I ended up buying 2 of them. That's where I got hooked in this crazy hobby big time. I think Ed and Cindy are in the Carolinas now. They left Eastburg a while ago.

Yes, they moved to the Carolinas about a year ago. I am in East Stroudsburg. There's a store now called Donovan's Reef. I bought a coral from them that was in Ed's tank.

I have picked up a few things at Donovan's.

I was just at The Pet Zone in Pittston today.

Bill is really coming along and getting some good stuff. He has the frag tank setup with some nice pieces.

and yea.... I had to buy something!

:)

Just see that you are in Bushkill. I am in Middle Smithfield near the CVS, supermarket on 209 etc. I guess almost neighbors :-).

Middel Smithfield!!!!!!! Holy Smokes! That's about as close to my back yard as you can get. About 14 miles I figure, lol. Do you either of your kids play little league?

Greg, Donavan's is a funny little place. He obviously doesn't want to spend $ on bulb changes for that reef tank in the back. But his fish are 100% trustworthy. He really does take time to make sure they are in good shape and eating before selling them. And his prices are really reasonable. But chances are he doesn't have much when you go there.

Yea... I was always impressed witht the quality of his fish. You do have to get there a the right time .... most of the time when I get there the tanks have all the little "sold to" or "Hold for" stickers on them. :)

Yeah, I gotta believe it's something of a "fraternal" organization that buys stuff there. I've been there when there wasn't a fish there without a sold sticker. A good guess would be that he takes special orders. I may have to go down there and talk to him about that.

My kids are one and two years old, but looking at my son (2) throwing the ball I think he will play little league when it's time.

Some of those stickers might have been mine :-). I think they do not get new stuff that frequently and people put their name on it right away. It then takes a few weeks for everybody to pick their stuff up. I bought quite a few fishes from them and I was always pleased with their quality and customer service. Sometimes you are just a little late and you see all these stickers. I like their fishes and the fact that they give the fish time to be healthy and eat.

The sometimes have good corals and then it takes a long time to see new arrivals come in. Like with the fish, they can tell you when they expect a shipment and then you can rush in. They certainly can upgrade the tank.

They were also very helpful with setting up my tank, giving me advice on equipment and livestock. They order you anything you ask them for and make phone calls to figure things out. All around very service oriented and nice, honest guys. I think we can be happy to have such a store in our area.

Greg, does this place in pittston carry fish and inverts too?

They have fish, some shrimp, nice clams, I don't see a lot of snails but they are probably there, softies, lps, sps, ...

Just so you know....

I just came back from Something Fishy (I've been there dozens of times since it opened where it is now and it has never looked better!), although the Pet Zone does get some good stuff and it is getting better all the time it does not compare in variety whatsoever to something fishy. His prices are very good for the most part though.

Greg, I just came back from SF too! He does have lots of stuff in there. He seems to have trouble getting sps to keep color, and it seems like he steers away from them. He always the best selection of gorgonians around though. I picked up 3 female square spot anthias for one of my 125's. Looking back at Ed & Cindy's place though, it was tough to compare to. I used to go to Todd's place when it was still in his garage. I used to get a kick out of him pulling dry goods down from the attic over the store!

Supervdl, we should hook up when the deep freeze subsides. Just to let you know, we just reorganized the LL up in our neck of the woods. We're going to do some really nice things for the kids and make sure they really learn to play the game. Opening day is 4/15, and we're planning a big old celebration right in the Middle School playground. Bring the kids and just ask for Angelo.
