pinch-a -penny sand

I remember one time we were talking about play sand and someone said they used sand from Pinch a Penny for their tanks. What kind of sand was it? Is it a little less "dusty" than play sand? Approx. what was the price of it? Thx.

it is like 7 bucks for a huge bag. It is pool filter sand. It is awesome in f/w but I dont know if I would use it for salt. It is also a larger grain than playsand.

Hi LadyFSU,
I used the Pinch a Penny sand in my freshwater tank and it has worked great. It is a larger grain like Playa0069u has indicated. I would say the gains are about 2 to 3 times that of regular saltwater sand. It might work but it would depend on what livestock would be using it. I still rinsed it and it wasn't that dusty - cleared up real fast.

No clue...these are not for reef tanks. They will have mangrove snappers, pin fish etc in it. Some very hardy, hard core fish.

I just used one of those things that you use for veggies - they have lots of little holes (mess type). I was able to get the big stuff out and then I just used 5g buckets, filled it with about 1/3 sand and the rest water - dumped the cloudy water out. There might be an easier way. I'll check with my friend that works at P-a-Penny and see what it's composed of (Is it calcium carbonate / aragonite or silica sand?).

I kind of got the scoop on the sand - "It's 20/30 silica sand. Our "suggested" retail is $8.99 for a 50 lb. bag.".

I have some sand I am not using anymore, prolly 80 pounds of it. It is in a bucket just sitting around. I had it in my 75 that I just sold. You can have it for 20 bucks.

Oh - I found out that the 20/30 is the grain size - whatever help that is. Also the 8.99 is suggested retail price so the stores could sell for more, just for your information.

why not use home depot sand i used 200 lbs of if for my 180 and have never had any problems but i dont keep corals though and its pretty white and i only had the brown algae for a very short time during the cycle and never got cloudy after the rinse and put in the water.

Hi Mrferrit, which type did you us? I keep hearing about this type and that brand but I'm not sure what we have local. I'm going to be needing some for my 29G that I'm about to put online -. I have a little live sand from my 75G and some live rock from it but not enough to finish the job. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for butting in LadyFSU.

I used lots of play sand from Lowe's on the student aquariums (600 lbs I think, lol), and $4 for 50lbs. It took about 2 days to get real clear. I just thought I'd try something different, and pinch-a-penny is basically across the street from me. I also have 2 55's at school that I've had up since April and it's 90% playsand and doing great.

That sounds great. I'm going to mix it with my live sand and I really didn't think it was necessary to purchase all of it live like I did my first tank. Thanks for the information - Lowes and play sand it will be this weekend!

They're doing great! I still have a few probs but all are up and running and most have fish and critters in them. I hope to have a LOT of new pics and info on my webpage by the end of the weekend.
