Pink Birdsnest?

Some of you guys mentioned that your's grew fast and then suddenly slowed down. Does anyone have any idea why that would happen?

There are some fantastic birds in this thread! :D

almost pink, I've had them color shift from brown to pink depending on placement, I'm assuming different light and flow levels. This pic it was under 440w VHO ( 2 x 03 white 2 x 03 blue )
frags of it went pink under 250w 10K AB mogul

This is by far, the most incredible coral pic I've ever seen on RC. Simply incredible.

Just a speculation... as the colony grows, the lower/innermost branches become shaded. Less light = less growth. I would also think that those areas of the colony would receive less flow due to the nature of the branches (dense/intertwined). Those areas will receive less food and less waste removal also.

I have a thin branched green(ORA) and a thicker branched pink. Both are some of my favorites. I think the fact that they have become so common has decreased their "prestige factor" and you just don't see many people post pics of them anymore.

I'll post mine :) What I'd like to see though is some of the pink with yellow tipped ones I was seeing a while back on some of the online vendor's sites. Anybody ??

Not sure, but water flow seems to be highly desired by these guys - so after a point maybe it starts to slow things too much around the colony?

Great descriptions + pics of the different species above :)

epon, I just had one very similar to that rtn on me a few days ago. Did you get that one from Playfair?

This is the birdsnest from Griss, he kept it several years. This photo was after it had been fragged.

This is a frag of the the above that I placed in my tank over a year ago.

This is how that coral grew in my tank in direct flow with a tunze 6100

Well, after viewing many of the outstanding examples displayed in this thread, it is with great reluctance that I post my specimen.

I've had it a year and a half now, during which I'd say it tripled in size, but for most of that time I've had to battle the Valonia and Cyano pockets that continually grow within it's branches. Oddly, I do not have this problem with any other coral I maintain, even the tighter-knit acros. Anyway, I have it in an area of very good (at least, I thought so) water flow and under decent and direct lighting but the situation remains. Because nothing seems to help, I will soon either frag it back or remove it entirely since I am out of the suitable real estate needed to move it intact.

By the way, it has always been the 'blunt tipped' species. I am much more fond of the sharper tipped kind but was of the assumption that they merely 'become' that way. Guess not. :)

Well here is one of mine. This is actually a wild colony (only wild colony in my tank. It is an older picture, the bleached branches have completely colored up.

Here is the growth rate on the frag I got from Playfair. It was one of my favorite corals. This was on 2/24/04.

This was it on 7/26/04.

This was it the morning of 10/20/04. Check out all the growth over the past three months.

This was eight hours later. I decided not to post the pictures of me crying though.

I really did like that coral, I'm already looking for another frag. I took a frag off of it when I noticed it starting to rtn but unfortunately it didn't suvive. I had also given a frag of it away a few months ago but it didn't survive either. :(

Color is quite variable IME depending on lighting intensity. Growth form is slightly thicker with high flow. Both of these corals like high flow but will do OK in medium flow.
Here is a side by side shot:

Seriatopora caliendrum on the left and Seriatopora hystrix on the right.

Regards,
Kevin

Are you guys sure they're really growing slower -- or just using resources to branch in many different directions at once, but not developing new branches as quickly?

Actually I guess that could be considered growing slower.

All of mine are thriving...

I also have this one like Konadog's but I got no pics right now of mine.

Flow seems to change mine. It was thin branched, and with more flow seems to have thickened up.

aquariumclown, is it just lighting, or is the first one purple? I also like the last one (green).

Honestly, I think it's a little of both. I do keep that one in low light so maybe it's darker than normal.

from my experience with frags of birdsnest, when it is high uip in the tank it becomes a lighter color, under 10k's in mr294's tank and under 14k's in mine, the frags are turning a bright pink.

i know an old thread.. but check out this "bird" "Seriatopora guttatus" at aims ... well clsoe enough in the faimly to be birds, even though it is not a "Seriatopora hystrix"
